Update from the Kajulu Village, Kisumu County People’s Committee

Last week, we came together to think of how our community in Kajulu Village would sustain itself in case of a lockdown caused by #COVID19KE.

We have since then been pushing the people of Kajulu to grow their food in a more coordinated fashion this season – and try have their own food reserve in case of a prolonged lockdown from COVID-19.

We have over the past few days talked to more people, and most are willing to grow a wider variety of crops. We are basically encouraging our people to not only continue growing maize, beans, sweet potatoes and cassava...

...but also complement these with vegetables like sukuma wiki, deck, osuga, kandhira – and especially fast-maturing veges like bor/kunde that they can start harvesting in a month.

We have three requests today:

1. Share your skills and knowledge(or your labour). Do you know a thing or two about agriculture (either by training or organically), and are willing to share your skills? Get in touch.

2. Give some seeds. Our greatest struggle right now is to get enough seeds to those farmers who don’t have enough before the planting season ends. If you are in Kajulu (or Kisumu), you can drop off some seeds at Guba.

These will go a long way in ensuring food security for a family or two.

3. Start a garden. If you have some space where you live, please plant some food before the rains end. If it’s a small space like in most urban areas, plant something – even a single cassava is good for a start.
