(Physicians) try to balance obligations as professionals w/their duties as husbands, wives, parents & children.
The risk to personal health from the coronavirus is alarming enough, but risk of infecting our families because of exposure on the job is for some unacceptable. Rates of infection among hcw ~14% of confirmed cases in Spain- risk of transmission to our loved ones not insignificant
👉Health care workers should not be forced to incur additional risk because people don’t want to practice social distancing (vacationers flocking to Florida beaches during spring break come to mind). nytimes.com/2020/04/02/opi…

At the peak of its epidemic, Wuhan required 2.6 beds in ICU for every 10,000 adults. Italy has less than half that capacity. Some low-income countries have just 1/100th of Italy’s -1 ICU bed per million Many more people may die than in the countries hit hardest so far.

#India It’s only a thousand cases & just over 30 deaths. This is probably because of testing not being adequate, similar to what happened in the early stage of the epidemic in US, as well, where it suddenly catches fire in some population, and then it really takes off.

And we’ve got a lot of compounding problems
-health-system capacity is weak
-hospital beds remarkably low
-population w/TB & respiratory issues, pneumonia, high rates of smoking & air pollution.
1/3 of India's adults are hypertensive
1/10 are diabetic
But, certainly, the conditions for a rapid spread of the disease are all there in the urban areas. And, without question, it’s likely that it will just rip through the population

Just arrived in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, which has been under lockdown for more than a week now. The mood among locals: anxiety, flashes of anger & frustration, and extreme boredom. Here I am getting my temperature measured in a hotel lobby.
With their Chinese New Year food supplies running low, many residents were venturing out today to stock up on groceries. The markets we saw had an abundance of fresh vegetables, rice, oil and fruit — even strawberries on sale.
But most are still trying to avoid going out if they can help it. One woman said she’s stopped taking her 9.5 yr old golden retriever Dongdong on long walks now. “We’re like thieves, sneaking out when no one is around.”

January 13, 2020 appears to be where #2019nCoV took its turn towards becoming epidemic / pandemic threat.

Steep increase in cases outside of China after 1/13/2020
As of today, it’s suspected that the incubation period is between 2-10 days. This means there are likely thousands who may have been exposed and are still not symptomatic. This is still a guess however; this virus isn’t the same as other coronavirus strains but it’s similar.
