In 2005, I wrote a piece in a now defunct publication, arguing that those who believed that the invasion & occupation of #Iraq & #Afghanistan had been ‘an disaster’ were misunderstanding the thinking of those who took us to war
The reason for the contradictory nature of this reality & perception lies in the gulf btw the professed reasons for the invasion & the real reasons that lay beneath
Did Bush & Blair care about creating a peaceful democracy?
Possibly
But they cared about other things far more
20yrs ago as the wreckage of the Twin Towers still smouldered, Bush talked ‘Axis of Evil’ (Iraq, Iran & N Korea) & laid out plans to invade #Afghanistan
This despite the fact that 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were Saudis
Millions questioned the legitimacy & wisdom of these wars
“We watch in complete shock as Taliban takes control of #Afghanistan. I’m deeply worried about women, minorities & human rights advocates. Global, regional & local powers must call for an immediate ceasefire, provide urgent humanitarian aid & protect refugees & civilians” @Malala
“A popularity of invasion
Handed down through centuries
A force of arms called gentle persuasion
What have we learned from history?
Apparently nothin'”
Since 2001, around a quarter-of-a-million Afghans have been killed #Kabul#Afghanistan
“Wake! For the sun, who scatter'd into flight
The stars before him from the field of night
Drives night along with them from Heav'n & strikes
The Sultan's turret with a shaft of light”
Sunrises on thousands of people stranded at Kabul airport #Afghanistan
“And on the pedestal these words appear
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings
Look on my works, ye Mighty, & despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless & bare
The lone & level sands stretch far away”
(Percy Shelley)
“#Afghanistan was cool at first but those #Taliban evildoers just ran off into the mountains & are still popping our guys”
Just before @BarackObama took office, I wrote this imagined extract from George Bush’s diary (with a little help from Terry Jones). newint.org/columns/essays…
“What we are witnessing in #Afghanistan is a tragedy that should have been foreseen & averted. Foreign govts must take every necessary measure to ensure the safe passage for all those at risk of being targeted by the #Taliban" @amnesty's @AgnesCallamard
#TonyBlair is trending, not for anything that he’s said, but ‘cos he’s been so silent
Bush & Blair justified the invasions of #Afghanistan & Iraq not on anything they’d done or were about to do, but on what they might do: the idea of pre-emptive war or anticipatory self-defense
“No one listened,” an anonymous US intelligence official told @ABC
Did the Biden & Johnson admins disregard assessments of several intelligence agencies that consistently predicted the rapid #Taliban takeover of #Afghanistan?
@Snowden: “if they’d started even one week earlier”
"As the clouds of tear gas lift, a clearer picture has emerged which shows police used excessive force against largely peaceful protesters, journalists & even children."
#Macron’s announcement that he plans to set up an independent body to investigate complaints against the police is something @amnesty have long been calling for
But amid the rest of his announcements at #BeauvauDeLaSecurite, it feels like window dressing
1/. “Today’s hearing didn’t focus at all about the allegations against #PrinceAndrew”
His lawyer - a man who defended Armie Hammer & several high profile #MeToo defendants - argued Andrew hadn’t been served with the papers...despite evidence that he had.
2/. “He’s clearly just making Virginia’s lawyers jump through every possible hoop."
In a sign that his delaying tactics are not likely to work, the judge told #PrinceAndrew’s lawyer: “I think we’re making this a lot more complicated than it really is”.
#BREAKING: Shocking internal @Facebook documents revealed by @WSJ show that the company has built a system which exempts high-profile users from some or all of its rules, allowing them to post potentially harmful content without consequence. google.co.uk/amp/s/www.wsj.…
“These allegations show how Facebook’s platform fuels the spread of harmful & abusive content. The fact these internal documents seem to contradict assurances they've given calls into question how much we can trust what they say" @amnesty's @AgnesCallamardamnesty.org/en/latest/news…
"If we prioritize truth over lies, tolerance over prejudice, empathy over indifference & experts over ignoramuses - maybe we can stop the greatest propaganda machine in history, save democracy, & still have a place for free speech" @SachaBaronCohen@adladl.org/news/article/s…
“Down the stream the swans all glide;
It's quite the cheapest way to ride.
Their legs get wet,
Their tummies wetter:
I think after all
The bus is better”
These two cygnets riding on their mothers’ back stay warm & dry.
2/. The two cygnets riding on their mother’s back (‘Uber Swan’ 😂) were part of a ‘litter’ of nine that hatched in May
Mute swans - the white swans most commonly seen in the UK - will hatch up to 10 eggs but not all cygnets will survive to adulthood.
3/. This video shows the same swan family on Hampstead Heath in June
Only 6 cygnets had survived their first six weeks
They may have been lost to crows, herons, magpies, gulls, foxes etc
One fishermen told me that he’d seen one of them “taken by a pike”
“What really alarms me about the 'War on Terrorism' is the grammar. How do you wage war on an abstract noun? How is 'Terrorism' going to surrender? It's well known, in philological circles, that it's very hard for abstract nouns to surrender”#TerryJones #911Anniversary#911attack
