NEW—The social & economic effects of the #COVID19 pandemic threaten to reverse progress in #GenderEquality by widening gender gaps that already existed in employment, education & gender-based violence, according to our new study in @TheLancet
🔗thelancet.com/journals/lance…
🗣“Based on previous crises, it is also likely men will be rehired at rates higher than women. This combination can result in severe impact to long-term income and career progression for #women globally,” said IHME Postdoctoral Scholar and co-author Dr. @luisaflorr
Based on data from 193 countries, a substantial amount of research shows that DIRECT health effects of the #pandemic have impacted 🚹 more than 🚺. Conversely, existing evidence indicates that INDIRECT effects of #COVID19 have affected women disproportionately. #GenderInequality
The study reviewed 5 main indicators:
1️⃣ Economic & work-related concerns
2️⃣ #Education
3️⃣ Safety at home and in the community #GenderBasedViolence
4️⃣ #Vaccine hesitancy and uptake
5️⃣ #Healthcare services
1️⃣ Economic & work-related concerns » Between March 2020 & Sept. 2021, women were more likely to report employment loss than men (26% vs. 20.4%) & to forgo work to care for others.
💡2.4x women more likely to forgo work to care for others than men by Sept. 2021
2️⃣ #Education » Women and girls were 1.21x more likely to report dropping out of school, with the largest #GenderGaps seen in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.
3️⃣ Safety at home and in the community » Women were 1.23x more likely to report that gender-based violence increased during the pandemic compared to men. Overall, 53% of women reported a perceived increase in #GenderBasedViolence
‼️ Highest rates of perceived increases📈 in gender-based #violence reported by:
• 61.2% of women in Latin America and the Caribbean
• 59.9% in high-income countries
• 56.7% in sub-Saharan Africa
4️⃣ #Vaccine hesitancy and uptake » In Jan. 2021, women reported significantly higher vaccine hesitancy (25.6%) compared with men (22.3%). The gender gap decreased 📉 and as of Sept. 2021, had largely closed at the global level
Authors @luisaflorr & Emmanuela Gakidou:“we found no #GenderInequality in vaccine uptake, an achievement for a new & rapidly implemented intervention…Gender-responsive preparedness plans that take intersectional needs of women, men & gender minorities into account are necessary”
5️⃣ Healthcare » #GenderGaps in care were seen in most regions early in the pandemic, these gaps closed, except in sub-Saharan Africa, where 🚺 needing sexual/reproductive care reported ⬆️ level of disruptions (20.6% vs 17.6%) but overall care disruptions for men were still higher
💡So what can be done?
As this study provides 1st comprehensive global evidence on gender disparities for health-related, social & economic indicators throughout the #pandemic, political/social leaders should use the data to implement programs focused on supporting women & girls
The only way to continue the work done by the inspiring women we celebrate for #WomensHistoryMonth, is by having leaders implement programs that focus on supporting girls & women returning to school, ensuring women’s growth and empowerment in years to come
As expected, the transmission intensity of Omicron is so great that it sweeps through populations in a very short period of time and then starts to decline.
The numbers of infections and numbers of reported cases really seem alarming to most people because they are much higher than what we’ve seen in other waves in the pandemic. But the health effects of #omicron, and the effects on death, are very muted.
Estimates suggest that #Omicron is just 3% as deadly as #Delta and 1/10 as likely to cause hospitalization while simultaneously spreading at “stunning” speeds and will likely infect as many people in the next 2 months as SARS-CoV-2 has infected people in the past 2 years
📍The good news is that in most countries, the death toll will be nowhere near as extreme as it was last winter.
According to the study, more than 27% of all deaths are from outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5), #coal combustion alone was responsible for half of those deaths, with natural gas and #oil combustion accounting for the other half
💡Notably, the burning of solid biofuels (like wood🪵for indoor heating and cooking 🍳), is another source of PM2.5, accounting for an addition 740k deaths, especially across #SouthAsia and Sub-Saharan #Africa.

🆕 ✨In recent years, low vaccine coverage has led to an increase in #measles cases in the US and #Europe, even after many countries had previously achieved elimination status.
In the US, nearly 1,300 #measles cases were recorded in 2019, with the vast majority occurring in tight-knit communities with low vaccination rates.
The #EuropeanUnion saw a nearly fivefold increase ⬆️ in measles since 2015, with 20,000 new cases recorded in 2019 and two nations (the #CzechRepublic & #Greece) losing their elimination status.
“Many of our physicians are at a breaking point,” IHME's @AliHMokdad told @business.
“It’s not easy to be day in and day out in an emergency room, in an ICU, looking at someone who is dying because he or she is not vaccinated.” #COVID19#VaccinesSaveLives#DeltaVariant
In 15 states, patients with confirmed or suspected #COVID19 are taking up more ICU beds than a year earlier, according to @NIH_NIAMS data. These are top states with highest %s of ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 patients:
