2/2 The Red Cross statement says they had no access to prisoners in #Olenivka before the strike. This contradicts Russian propaganda channels which claimed they visited 4 days before.
US Intel concurs with my assessment Russia is delaying UN/ICRC visits to plant evidence.
Last night (in y'day's thread) I reported on what seemed to be #Ukraine strikes again on, or near, the #Antonivskyi bridge in #Kherson.
Now a statement from the occupiers says #Russia's air defence worked well and no damage was done. Judge for yourself!
No photos from #Kharkiv yet, where there were 3 separate missile attacks in the early hours.
Mayor Ihor Terekhov says rockets landed without incident in two parts of the region, but in Nemyshlyansky district they hit the local administration building.
#Russia says it's prevented an assassination attempt on the collaborator head of occupied #Berdyansk.
They say surveillance video shows a man "pretending to fall and plant a powerful bomb under his car."
No date given but they say the man confessed to being paid by #Ukraine SBU
In #Donetsk anger as a missile lands in the centre of the city while the occupiers hold a memorial service for a female deputy commander who died in the war.
With so many "false flags" there is no proof #Ukraine fired this rocket.
One of the main propaganda channels in #Donetsk published this video of the moment the missile is said to have struck the hotel in the centre of the occupied city.
Am I too cynical to wonder why someone was filming a wall and also no-one seems surprised, let alone shocked?
The lux Donbass Palace hotel in central #Donetsk is next to the theatre where the Occupiers were holding a memorial service for Olga Kachura.
#Russia's propaganda army TV channel was filming an interview when the missile landed in the centre of #Donetsk.
#Russia's authorities in #Donetsk say 5 people died when the rocket landed in the centre of the occupied city this morning.
#Ukraine has emphatically denied it fired the missile.
Presidential adviser in #Kyiv says #Ukraine has not hit civilian targets "only #Russia (or DPR) hits civilians. It's pointless for us to strike any event in #Donetsk."
1/ A thread (within a thread) with my analysis and thoughts on today's developments.
Firstly I condemn the attack in central #Donetsk unequivocally. There have been reports of #Kadyrov's troops staying in the Donbass Palace hotel, but even if that is true, no attack should have
2/
..happened when a service was taking place. #Ukraine denies the attack and #Russia does have 'form' for firing on its own. Russia also desperately tries to move the narrative on from its likely killing of POWs in #Olenivka.
However if Ukraine did carry out this attack there
3/
..should be consequences for those who took the decision.
It's worth saying that the person being commemorated in #Donetsk was a traitor. Olga Kachura was previously a #Ukraine police officer in #Horlivka. She had been sentenced to 12 years prison for terrorism offences.
4/
Earlier the @amnesty report strongly criticised #Ukraine for using hospitals and schools as military bases.
I do agree this is unethical if missiles are being fired from hospitals and contravenes the Geneva Convention.
But some things to be remembered here too...
5/
Without the first, and biggest war crime, no others would have been possible. That crime was Putin's decision to invade a peaceful nation.
Also remember #Ukraine is not attacking #Russia even now. That's perverse, almost unique in any war. A defender cannot hit the aggressor
6/
So #Ukraine is trying to defend its cities and liberate occupied territories. Using weapons in wide open spaces makes them easy targets. It's obvious military has to try to "hide" some, especially less mobile MLRS systems etc. Ideally they wouldn't be near any civilians..
7/
..and it's been good to see #Ukraine first ask people to leave frontline towns, and now enforce an evacuation, to try to avoid civilian casualties.
The answer to everything is of course simple. #Russia leaves #Ukraine which instantly stops all civilian casualties.
end of🧵
#Ukraine's Minister of Defence has fired the Heads of the largest state-owned arms traders.
Vadym Nozdryu of "Ukrspecexport" and Yevhen Larin from "Spetstechnoexport". It's reported by Censor that the govt is unhappy with their procurement of weapons.
Sorry, you are clearly insane, a paid troll, or both.
Ukraine did not exist. Of course by 1950s Stalin had already murdered up to 10 million of the most patriotic Ukrainians, mostly through Holodomor.
Try learn the real history not Putin's diet of sh*t
With regards to the above story about the attack on collaborators in #Luhansk oblast, I should say I have not been able to verify it. However the source I linked to is usually reliable
#Russia propaganda channels say that Wagner troops and regular Russian soldiers have "broken through #Ukraine defences and entered the city" of #Bakhmut (RU: #Artemovsk)
They claim fighting is on Patrice Lumumba Street, although this is still on the very outskirts of the town.
#Nikopol under attack again, this time the sky is lit up, likely by thermite fire from MLRS
Presumably as with every other day recently, fired from the nuclear power plant in #Enerhodar.
Talk about putting civilians at risk! Amnesty didn't mention that!
Divine intervention... or sabotage?
A truck believed to be carrying stolen #Ukraine grain, ran into problems in #Sevastopol... it also ran in to numerous other cars when the brakes seemed to fail.
Hello, welcome to Friday and to Day 163 of #Russia's war on #Ukraine
Critical days after The Kremlin's tactic of carpet bombing the front line, then throwing 1000s of cannon fodder into the "grey zone" seems to be pushing Ukraine back in #Donetsk.
All the news, all day, here⬇️
The @TheStudyofWar last night reported #Ukraine "is likely seizing the strategic initiative and forcing #Russia to reallocate forces" due to threats in #Kherson.
However their maps don't include the news about #Avdiivka and #Bakhmut which I brought you in yesterday's thread
Also last night I showed the scenes in #Nikopol - and I'll tweet a new video in the next post
UK's MoD's update highlights the sheer recklessness of #Russia firing on Nikopol from a nuclear power plant in #Enerhodar, storing weapons there knowing #Ukraine can't risk firing there
Still big problems for #Russia in the occupied south of #Ukraine. British Intel today highlighting the transport links which will hinder their attempts to fend off a Ukraine assault in #Kherson or counter attack here towards #Mykolaiv.
The #Ukraine land assault in #Kherson will come, but #Russia adding 1000s of extra (untrained) conscripts + Wagner mercenaries to the warzone, complicates matters
But let's not forget this is NOT happening due to Russia's goodwill. It's because The Kremlin is allowed to export goods and Kaliningrad was unblocked.
The last day of July is Day 158 of #Russia's war of choice.
Each day I document the major news and events, along with analysis. I've been working in #Ukraine for 20 years and studying the relationship with its neighbour as Putin became more and more aggressive.
Enjoy the thread
Of course not only Putin and #Russia involved in the illegal aggression.
#Belarus is playing an active part too. I am disappointed that Britain's @DefenceHQ does not acknowledge that Lukashenka is the ILLEGITIMATE president. @Tsihanouskaya won the 2020 elections
Today the number of Russian Armoured Personnel Carriers destroyed by #Ukraine in this war so far ticked over 4,000.
Also a lot of artillery systems are being taken out in recent days. Plus another 160 soldiers eliminated.
Welcome to the weekend.
Day 157 of #Russia's illegal full-scale war on #Ukraine, but it's 8 and a half years since the start of the invasion when Putin's troops appeared on #Crimea and then later east 🇺🇦
Ukrainians fight on for freedom.
Here's the daily🧵
All the news in 1 place
The condemnation of both the castration/murder videos & bombing of #Ukraine POWs in Russian held territory, continue at high levels.
The UN says it is "shocked by the recent videos" in a statement about the torture and shooting in the head of a prisoner
