Excited to have our new AER paper on height in India as @AEAjournals chart of the week. Here's my summary of the paper in 3 charts. 1/4
#1 The puzzle: At any income level, child height is lower in India than elsewhere (here we compare Indian states to African countries). 
#2 Proximate cause: India's excess stunting is driven by higher birth-order kids. That must be due to factors that vary *within* a family.
#3 Root cause is favoritism for eldest sons. India's stunting is driven by girls + non-eldest sons. Much less stunting in matrilineal states
