Thread: @OIRSpox claims "less than 1% of allegations from Airwars determined as credible" Here’s why that says more about Coalition than us
2) Let’s take Raqqa. From Jan to June we tracked 196 separate alleged casualty events in city alone - reportedly killing up to 760 civilians
3) These aren’t abstract claims. We can name 188 likely victims - often killed at specific locations in reported air or artillery strikes
4) Those reports are coming from Iraqis and Syrians themselves, from the ground, in conflict areas. We track and provisionally assess claims
5) Despite Coalition having details of all 196 alleged events it’s only assessed a maximum of 33 cases so far - finding 4 incidents credible
6) No more than 87 other Raqqa city cases still ‘pending’ with Coalition. A further 76+ events appear not to have been logged by them at all
7) So at least 83% of the allegations we’ve tracked for Raqqa city Jan-June (163 or more cases) have yet to be assessed by the Coalition
8) Even when cases assessed, Coalition mainly looks at internal videos. We’ve seen no evidence it “conducts interviews” as @OIRSpox claims
9) Col Dillon also said that “a lot of reports that we find credible are self reported.” He’s right.
10) Majority of confirmed civcas cases are reported by pilots and analysts. Coalition reporting shows repeated bias towards such events
11) But the Coalition also continues to demonstrate a strong bias *against* publicly well-substantiated civilian casualty cases, eg at Raqqa
12) When Coalition dismisses a case as Non Credible, what it’s really saying is, “We don’t believe those Iraqis and Syrians reporting this.”
13) Over time, the Coalition’s repeated playing down of civilian casualties is corrosive. It may well have serious long term consequences
14) Raqqa and Mosul have been smashed in a brutal war against ISIS. Many civilians have died. Claiming otherwise dishonours their sacrifice
15) You can see Colonel Dillon’s full Pentagon press briefing here facebook.com/CJTFOIR/videos…
16) We'll finish by quoting Coalition's own data. Half of all 156 confirmed civilian casualty events have occured in first 6 months of 2017
17) Don't take Coalition's word for it. @amnesty @Raqqa_SL @UNCoISyria @syriahr @snhr @HRW are all raising alarm. Surely it's time to act.
