Ideas. They will sink or swim based on "operational excellence" (competence).

"Connections" in this context are secondary.
Young Nigerians are socialized to believe in "connections". An incompetent older generation created a dysfunctional state on such thinking.
"Connections" are the classical "IM" (I ma mmadu).

In times past, it was frowned upon.

Today, it is treated as the holy grail.
The whole point of "connections" in the Nigerian context is to give you an unfair advantage because you know someone.
Nobody talks about "level playing field in Nigeria".

The average Nigerian is shallow, typically chanting slogans he/she barely understands.

When Alexander the Great set out to dominate the known world, he didn't bother moving West, he moved to the East - because that was where trade was happening.

For several centuries, right up to Columbus, East-West overland trade was the most prominent trade.
European maritime powers (Spain & Portugal, then The Netherlands, Britain and France) effectively cut off Silk Road trade and established a new global trading pattern; which still exists today.

Is it wrong to question this global trading pattern? No & that is what China is doing
If you get beyond the "Belt and Road" driven hysteria - you can examine the facts. The West put itself at the center of global trade (starting from Columbus) - so there's nothing wrong if China attempts to build a trading architecture that puts itself at the center.

I am going to focus a bit on Peter Obi today. He's not the typical Nigerian politician; he is understated - so he is relatively unknown by traditional "social media influencers" and the so-called "technocratic elite"; but he's a very remarkable politician.
In terms of pedigree, Peter graduated from the University of Nigeria (1984), started off in business (he's never shied away from saying "I am a trader"), was chairman of Guardian Express Mortgage Bank and was the youngest ever chairman of Fidelity Bank PLC.
In the wake of Mbadinuju's disastrous rule, he went into politics. His campaign slogan was "are we cursed, or are we the cause"? It was pertinent; Anambra students missed a school year due to misrule & the state was in disarray - while so-called "leaders" fiddled.

Geopolitics is everything.

The geopolitical environment post WW2 led to the Marshall Plan, it does not exist today - but many nations took advantage of it.

The geopolitical environment during the Korean War helped rekindle U.S. interest in Japan's industry.
Lee Kwan Yew took advantage of a combination of the Cold War geopolitics and Singapore's strategic location to attract U.S. interest and investment.

China's "Belt and Road Initiative" is creating certain geopolitical opportunities that smart nations will take advantage of.
A common myth is that if you adopt economic reforms, the world will open up to you and you will prosper. It doesn't work that way - you also need the support of major economic powers, & they will only do give it to you, if your strategic interests align.

1/ People in the Taxi and Private Hire trades need to put their Champagne on ice. The current ECJ ruling on Uber as a Transport Company means very little, if any change in the England and Wales. #Uber
2/ Uber May well have to withdraw from certain European cities where they will no longer be competitive . Instead they could switch investment and focus to England and Wales.
3/ Given all their legal issues in England. Uber will make full use of any appeals process. In London this could take several years. Many Private Hire Operators will be forced out of business in that time.
