Isaiah opens in the middle of a ravaging war. The Assyrians, a northern superpower, work their way south to a huge pot of gold (Egypt). God’s people in the middle are getting mowed down: Jerusalem (northern city) is barely holds together; Judah (southern city) quakes in fear.
Inside Jerusalem, paganism dominates the temple, a god-manipulation tactic. God hates the sham temple practices. True religion must be purged of pagan worship of the nations, demonstrated by heartfelt love for the weak and vulnerable. Israel is functionally kingless.
Yet one day all the gentile nations will stream into the mountain of God. The living God will one day become the center of global interest. A King will rule over global peace and prosperity.
