Every time someone asks, it gets pushed back another day.
Look, here's the honest answer: It's messy. It's messy on multiple fronts. It's messy because I'm contracted for other books.
It's messy because the thought of reopening that world after having to close it abruptly physically hurts.
It's messy because I need the closure, and I know my readers want the closure, but finding the time and energy and soul to return to it isn't easy or simple.
It's messy because I'm not allowed to have any victor in this industry without someone demanding that book, or accusing me of abandoning it--and by extension its readers.
It's messy because I love those books, I am so f*cking proud of those books, I would have fought to the ends of the world for those books, I tried.
It's messy because sometimes you do everything right and it still isn't enough.
It's messy because part of me still believes in a world where those books find enough audience to merit the publishing attention they weren't given.
It's messy because for the first two years after the series was stopped--after the publisher stopped it--I burst into tears at the very mention of it.
It's messy because I am still not over that experience, and because I can't justify putting that book ahead of ones that publishers do support, as hard as that is.
It's messy because I want to finish the series.
It's messy because I never want to see it again.
It's messy because my heart is still broken.
It's messy because I don't know what to do.
