Being back home in rural Indiana for the holidays, I’m left with such an anger that Trump and the Right have politicized Christmas. 1/
The War On Christmas business has been around further and created this false crisis of identity and culture, furthering a narrative that people were under intentional attack. 2/
In this way, progress feels like a focused assault instead of the world simply changing as times go on and people changing with them. 3/
But Trump threw jet fuel on the fire. People say Merry Christmas now like they’re challenging you, like it’s a cultural code word. 4/
People talk about Christmas, which used to be, if not an actual paradise, a respite as everyone just wanted to get along for their holiday, as if it’s a final showdown. 5/
Because of the Right’s narrative, people in those communities think of Christmas like the Alamo now, a last ditch effort to save a culture under attack. 6/
I’ll never forgive them for that. They’ve taken one of the few restful periods for these people, a moment to relax, and made it an anxious war just so they can keep them voting against their own interests. 7/
This is all about stoking cultural worry over political awareness, a reason to be frightened and put off questioning things like tax cuts for the wealthy and attempts to dismantle the social safety net. 8/
And they’ve soured the damn thing. Infected it. They couldn’t let people have a few days with their family. They had to make sure every single day was an apocalypse, every salutation or closing a fight. 9/9
