Before I leave this account, I'd like to share some final thoughts. As you may know, global temperatures have been gradually increasing since the Industrial Revolution, primary driven by a greenhouse effect caused by increasing atmospheric CO2 from human activity. #climatechange
Greenhouse gas emissions have many sources - some of which are natural, but most are the result of human actions like deforestation, burning fossil fuels, and agriculture. Certain soil cultivation practices, fertilizer use, and livestock are significant contributors to GH gases.
Red meat in particular, lamb and beef, contribute significantly more greenhouses gases per pound of meat produced than other other source of food. One pound of beef generates more CO2 than 1 gallon of gasoline burned.
And 60% of beef consumed in this country is ground beef. Have you heard of the Impossible Burger? It's not a veggie burger, but it is a plant-based burger engineered to have the taste and texture of real ground beef. impossiblefoods.com/burger/
There's also been some work attempting to grow the equivalent of ground beef in the lab from bovine stem cells, using many of the same tissue engineering techniques I mentioned earlier this week. So far, they're very expensive to produce, and may not save much energy.
I believe that a cleaner and more sustainable future is coming. Wind and solar are now cheaper per kWh than any other source of energy. And hopefully, "impossible" beef becomes cheaper than the real thing and widely available.
(And can survive the inevitable campaign to label it as some toxic and unnatural abomination of science.)
But until that future comes, consider eating less meat. Even one meat-free day a week can have an impact. @PopSci recently started a movement to avoid red meat in the month of October appropriately called "No Red October". popsci.com/noredoctober-r…
