I deeply appreciated @AndrewPeterson's tearful apology for the lack of racial diversity in the music video for his moving new song, "Is He Worthy?" (bit.ly/2G4zF0V). He humbly asked for the forgiveness of those whom the video caused "grief" and "pain." /1
Yes, the omission was "ironic," perhaps even "painfully ironic" for some, considering how Revelation 5, on which his lyrics were based, includes one of the grandest heavenly portraits of the pan-ethnicity of Christ's redeemed Bride (v. 9). /2
But that's not the only element in that rich, multifaceted, apocalyptic vision. In fact, Andrew's lyrics included but one line evoking the "every nation" motif, probably in equal proportion to the emphasis found in the scriptural text. /3
The lack of diversity in the video may make that one line fall flat, may be notable in the interest of inclusion generally. But I'm not sure it invalidates the song or demands public repentance. Those who say it does may be reacting as if it were entitled, Is He Multicultural? /4
Here's my point: Andrew said that he's prayed, "Please, Lord, don't let my mistake detract from the point of the song." The rest of us have a role in becoming the answer to that prayer: Don't let his mistake detract from the point of the song. He is worthy. /5
I pray Andrew's conscience isn't unduly burdened by this "misstep." And I pray we extend a generous spirit. Advances in reconciliation are made not by avoiding mistakes but by the way we handle mistakes—together—when we make them. /6*
