Dismisses the GFA as a "shibboleth" and "played up". And then denies saying that - as well he might, given how nonsensical a claim it is. Despite it being recorded.
This eejit was a junior NI Minister, btw. He doesn't get a fool's pardon. Owen Smith was sacked for being right on NI. One wonders if being this wrong will attract any punishment.

Something I think may be relevant is that the UK never experienced the Eurocrisis - in fact, spent at least part of it undermining efforts to fix things - and so doesn’t understand how the iron entered the EU’s soul in that process.
The Eurocrisis was an epochal experience for the Eurozone countries. It was probably touch and go. It really did take everything necessary to survive it. But it did. Despite the predictions of “done in six months” about every three weeks from the likes of AEP, it survived.
In that process, with Mario Draghi proving probably the most successful Italian general since Caesar, the Eurozone faced a lot of real pressure from those with real leverage.

It didn’t blink.

This is nothing, *nothing* like the Treaty - which he couldn't even get right - still less the Civil War. And it's frankly offensive to compare them.
@APHClarkson I'm from a city that was burnt in the War of Independence. Deliberately burnt, as a reprisal. I regularly work in a building with, even after it was rebuilt, the bullet scars on it from the start of the Civil War, forced on us by Churchill and Lloyd George.
@APHClarkson The sheer mayhem, from all sides, that went on in Cork is hard to overstate. It was a full-blown, vicious, guerrilla war, rapidly succeeded by a Civil War. Yet all of this is reduced to a glib, chin-stroking, aren't-I-smart talking point that's not even accurate.

It is fair to note at this juncture that, yes, May has been poor as a PM. Better than her appalling tenure as Home Secretary, but poor.

But at least she’s turned up, and has at least tried to engage with reality. The same cannot be said of the Brexiters who are now running away.
As Leo and Simon noted last night, she gave her word on NI, and when push came to shove, when there was going to be a real cost to her, she has stood by it.

That counts. It may not be a full defence, but it’s at least a decent mitigation.

Rather than keep HMG’s word and face facts, they’d prefer the madness of No Deal that would literally cost lives - probably on the Border, unquestionably through medicine shortages - to save their ideological blushes.

That is a contemptible stance that merits scorn.
