People still talk about charging speed like it's a long-term obstacle for electric cars. It's not, for several reasons 1/
First, electric cars have already come a long way. The Tesla lineup now adds roughly 150 miles of range in 20 minutes, which is totally reasonable for long-distance driving. But that’s nothing compared to what’s coming soon 2/
There are huge ultra-fast charging networks going up across Europe and North America (Ionity, Electrify America) that offer 350 kW charging (vs Tesla’s 120 kW). No car can currently take that much juice, but they will soon, starting with Porsche’s Mission E in 2019 3/
Imagine a world where 350 kW charging is the norm—200+ miles in 10 minutes. Would you feel grossly inconvenienced to stop for 10 minutes after every 3 hours of highway driving? There’s more 4/
Along with faster chargers, battery capacities are also rising. A lot of people don’t understand how that affects charging. Batteries charge fastest when they’re closer to empty and slower when they’re near full. So bigger batteries mean faster charging. Also 5/
People often overlook the true convenience of EV charging: If your home or your workplace has a place to charge, you wake up or leave work every day with a full charge. You essentially never have to stop to fill up 6/
Want to see how these pieces come together? Check out Tesla’s new Roadster, planned for 2020. It isn’t just pretty to look at 7/
The Roadster gets 620 miles per charge. At that point gas cars have the range problem. Wake up, drive for 10 hours, hotel, repeat. If for some reason you want to drive 24 hours/day with a partner, it'll take more time to take care of your human needs than your charging needs 8/
Sure, the Roadster is a $200k car, but it’s also Tesla’s goal post for where the market is headed. The original 2008 Roadster had a range of 244 miles. At the time that was bonkers—now the long-range Model 3 blows it away at half the price 9/
Notice I haven’t even brought up major advances in battery tech (solid state batteries, etc), which are also coming. That’s because we don’t need any magic leaps to make range anxiety go away; we only need a bit more time on the rapidly improving technology curve 10/
Charging is still a limiting issue in 2018 for some drivers. I’m a prime example: I park on the city streets and only ever use my car to drive long distances. But give it just a few more years and even people in my position will look back on “range anxiety” and laugh /11/
