Seeing @realFemiOtedola in a molue and reading funny comments made me think about a subject in my #startup class; Crafting an #ElevatorPitch. What if you find yourself seated next to Otedola on a bus. How can you pass your message if he's getting off the bus in 30 seconds? Thread
An #ElevatorPitch is basically a 15-30 second speech that succinctly explains to people who you are, what you do or what you’re seeking. The idea is that you can deliver your pitch to someone in the amount of time it will take an elevator to get you both where you're going
In this case, molue or danfo or train or even okada. 2019 is coming who knows what billionaires will do or where they will go in the next few months, as @OgbeniDipo will say, ji masun #ElevatorPitch
Elevator pitches are super important for entrepreneurs, startups, small business owners, people who need investor funds or capital, idea magnates, tech wizards etc. You’ll need it when you eventually meet a prospect and they ask you what you do, better be ready #ElevatorPitch
An #ElevatorPitch can also be used during job interviews, especially when you're asked about yourself. Interviewers often begin with the question, "Tell me about yourself" think of your elevator pitch as a super-condensed version of your response to that request
1st thing, never see a billionaire and beg him to epp you. Giving you feeding money is the least he cld do, and even if he obliges you, you may have shot yourself in the foot because there’s a lot you could gain from retaining a biz relationship with him, stay woke #ElevatorPitch
So let’s say you step in the elevator or a bus or train or okada and find yourself face-to-face with @TonyOElumelu @AlikoDangote or @alakijaofficial or a top shot client you’ve been dying to land and as you smile at her, she smiles back and says, hi what do you do? #ElevatorPitch
So, what do you do? That’s why before you get on that elevator you have to be prepared. To craft a good elevator pitch, I tell my students, take a piece of paper and number it from 1 to 10 #ElevatorPitch
Then, fill in the most important bits of information that you want to convey about yourself, your service or product, or your company. #ElevatorPitch
What, exactly, do you do? What have you achieved, and what are your goals? Who does your company serve and why? Focus on the most interesting or memorable facts - the ones that really make you stand out from others #ElevatorPitch
Do it all under 10 bullet points, each point could be a paragraph, it doesn’t matter, just make sure you get ALL that you do down on paper #ElevatorPitch
Read through and eliminate any unnecessary or unclear information. More importantly, enhance your best sides. “I’m a natural leader” is less likely to interest anyone like “I’ve led teams that have organized the best int'l concerts in Lagos for the past 5 years” #ElevatorPitch
Information will sound abstract without examples, get a very good example of what you’ve done and explain it in one short paragraph. Get five small cards, and label them “Who I Am” “What I Do” “How I Do It” “Why I Do It” and “Who I Do It For” #ElevatorPitch
Add each item on the list of 10 items you’ve created to the card where it fits best. Ideally, you’ll have one or two compelling sentences underneath each heading, reshuffle accordingly to get the best picture #ElevatorPitch
Organize your cards in a logical order, making sure the most important information comes first. Remember, you often only have a few seconds to communicate with someone. If you get cut off, what would you want them to walk away remembering? #ElevatorPitch
Add an interesting fact or stat to use at the beginning of your speech. Your goal is to immediately engage your prospect so that they are intrigued & want to hear more. How about "do you know more business deals have been sealed in an elevator meet than on phone?" #ElevatorPitch
Recite your pitch to someone close who can be objective, and ask for constructive feedback. Although we love our friends and families, sometimes they think too highly of us so they may not be objective! #ElevatorPitch
I remember back in the day, @tundeoladosu and I used to give each other a thumbs up on everything we did, I believe we're wiser now, lol #ElevatorPitch
Use the feedback to finesse your pitch even further then pick up your phone and record yourself saying it. Listen and make sure your tone is friendly, non-threatening or pushy and not too fast, knowing you only have a few moments to speak may subconsciously increase your pace
Now ride the "Elevator" The next time you ride an elevator alone, practice your speech or at home, stand in front of your mirror at home and practice it with a timer #ElevatorPitch
After you've perfected it, get ready for the next @realFemiOtedola molue ride, or your next interview, or your next network event, don’t be caught unawares, may we not be unfortunate o. The End #ElevatorPitch
