Earlier this year, I conducted interviews with 50 journalists and other experts within/around the news media to explore the ethics of amplifying networked bigotry, identity-based harassment, and dis- and misinformation. Here is the final, 3-part report: datasociety.net/output/oxygen-…
Part 1 focuses on the role trolling played in the 2016 election (and not in the way you might think); Part 2 on the ethics of amplification (with a specific focus on economic, labor & identity issues); Part 3 on better practices for reporting on bigots, abusers, and manipulators
While the third part is focused on journalistic amplification, the better practices guide is also applicable to everyday social media sharing. I hope it is helpful, and am deeply grateful to all the reporters, academics, and advocates who spoke to me for the project!
