After getting out of a domestically violent relationship and a fundamentalist, cult-like religion within a few months of each other, I felt a sense of freedom that I had never felt before.
I was under the impression, initially, that leaving these relationships was all that I needed to do in order to embrace a new life. In reality, leaving was obviously important, but only the first step.

A Thread: John MacArthur & Sexual Abuse

John MacArthur has been doubling down lately regarding a woman's place in the church. Why now? Bc he sees #metoo #churchtoo coming for his ministries. If women can't speak, then women can't speak up about the sex abuse he's hidden. 1 of 11
John MacArthur's seminary/university is on accreditation probation. The first report by the accreditation agency cited administration was ignorant regarding Clery Act and VAWA, both of which protect victims of sexual crimes. 2 of 11
In fact, John MacArthur's Master's University & Seminary has been fined by the US Dept of Education for noncompliance with the Clery Act, which protects victims of sexual crimes. 3 of 11

When I first started writing about #ChurchToo, a source wrote to me, "I hope you are praying up and gearing up... abuse within church circles is so much more than most realize and is a scary rabbit hole to uncover."

I knew she was right, but only intellectually.

1/
I didn't know yet what it felt like to interview a survivor for hours and then be unable to formulate sentences beyond, "babe, could we watch a movie? Do we have ice cream?"

I didn't know what it felt like to dream about assault.

I didn't know how I'd fear for my children.

2/
I didn't know how I'd struggle to talk about any of this because of the fact that it pales in comparison to what abuse survivors themselves have suffered. It pales in comparison to what it costs them just to tell me about it.

A Thread: Today the Board of Directors of @mastersuniv/@MastersSeminary is meeting. Will they finally publicly address this SEXUAL CRIME that occurred ON CAMPUS? Crime/Arrest of the student employee was 6/12/19. No official stmt (1/10)

#MeToo #churchtoo
The Student EMPLOYEE was a Resident Assistant, meaning he LIVED in the dorms with plenty of opportunity to take illegal pictures for sexual gratification. Why no PSA from @mastersuniv administration? Why no warning there was an alleged predator living among the students? (2/10)
@mastersuniv @MastersSeminary is already on accreditation probation. The accrediting agency cited a negligent lack of knowledge of Clery Act and Violence Against Women Act by administration. (3/10)

Where is the holy and righteous anger? As if the gospel negates any justice and from protecting the sheep from the wolves. Can’t people see that the true shepherds take their crooks and beat the wolves. They care and are charged for the sheep. #churchtoo
This isn’t an either or issue. The gospel includes justice. As “Stranger on the Road to Emmaus” bible study pointed out, God has 2 sides, like a coin. Love & Justice. This issue at hand is the horrid ways SBC has handled abuse (Look at big names in SBC who have done wrong).
All I see is one side who is just referring to people who righteously demand something be done, as “woke” or “emotional.” Jesus would never ever do this. Nobody says deny the accused a proper trial. They are saying err on the side of protecting kids till the police sort

Justice and forgiveness: they don’t contradict! In Heaven, Saints don’t sin, right? But here: saints asking when God will avenge them. (Cue the psychological abuse of pastors to now say they aren’t being forgiving and Jesus loves all). #churchtoo #csa 1/6
We are born with the demand for justice when sin is done. Then along comes abusers that say, “see, you aren’t being forgiving by allowing not wanting the pedophile in the church.” 2/6

This is the theology of The Family, as we discussed with @JeffSharlet in episodes 3 and 4 of @crossroads_pod. King David was a horrible person but chosen by God. The chosen are chosen, and the “proof” of chosenness is power.

Sproul was caught up in the Ashley Madison scandal. He was also arrested for drunk driving w/ kids in the car.
“Several states consider sexual contact between clergy and parishioners seeking counseling to be a crime. Florida doesn’t have such a law on the books.”

But hey, in Florida you *can* legally shoot anyone coming to confront you on it under Stand Your Ground, so there’s that. 🙃

*NEW* Ex-Southern Baptist leader Paige Patterson has for years downplayed his role in a sex scandal that some say is emblematic of the SBCs broader abuse problem #SBCtoo #ChurchToo @_PPatterson_

A newly unearthed trove of videos/letters gives new details:
houstonchronicle.com/news/investiga…
@_PPatterson_ Darrell Gilyard was accused of sexual misconduct at churches in Texas, Oklahoma & Florida but was still mentored by Patterson until he confessed/resigned his Southern Baptist church in July 1991.

Gilyard was convicted of sex crimes with children in '08. #SBCtoo #ChurchToo
@_PPatterson_ For decades, Patterson has maintained that he did everything in his power to investigate the myriad claims his protege faced.

But letters + video show that Patterson downplayed many allegations and suggested others remain quiet about them #SBCtoo #ChurchToo

In light of Jeffrey Epstein's suicide here's a thread on exposed sex offenders and suicide. #metoo #churchtoo #CSA
When sex offenders are exposed and are being held responsible for their criminal actions some are at risk of committing suicide. Expert Anna C. Salter notes this in her books "Predators, Pedophiles, Rapists, & Other Sex Offenders" and "Transforming Trauma"
@Nicole_Bromley experienced this when her abusive stepfather committed suicide after she disclosed his abuse.

COZA: THE CHURCH, THE YOUTH

Over the past couple of days, a lot of young people have sought my opinion on the sad issue about the alleged rape case involving the senior pastor of COZA. Here's my opinion. A thread. #ChurchToo #ProtectNotRape #IStandWithTheTruth
I have tried very hard to contain my conflicting emotions between my stand against any form of abuse, especially against the female gender, -which informed my joining the #HeForShe Movement-, and my understanding of the church as a spiritual entity./1
This is more so as the social media opens up the space for all manner and shades of opinions to the end that innocent young people are easily misled. If this rape accusation had to do with just an ordinary individual, it would have been easier./2

Of all the things I’ll remember from #SBC19, what just happened at an airport bar will stand out the most. #SBCtoo #ChurchToo

A brief story about the prevalence of sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention, and just how much work is ahead:
Our flight was full of Southern Baptists, including two guys who spent most of their flight talking about #SBC19 and what they felt was a slow but important shift in the SBC’s broader culture.

I occasionally took breaks from reading, as the subject absolutely fascinates me.
After the flight, I waited outside the gate to see if they’d be up for talking to me a bit more.

Both were, and one had a 2-hour layover, so we sat down at a nearby bar table. He knew of and appreciated our work, and had clearly thought a lot about the issues #SBCtoo #Churchtoo

Today, we're going to do a brief (lol, brief) review of Evangelical Christian Complementarianism. There have been whole books written on the subject, so this thread is in no way exhaustive. I'll do my best to show my work, and make it as practical as possible.
Before we dive in too deep, it's worth noting that while ECs talk about this topic a lot, they don't agree, particularly on the practical applications.
For example, the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) has a statement of faith on their website: cbmw.org/about/statemen…

So I see that thanks to some high profile shares another article about p*rnography is making its way around the #ChurchToo tag and I just want to take a moment and state that for the most part, right now, I am deeply unconcerned about the “role” of p*rn.
First off, people, mostly men, with power have been grooming, abusing and assaulting people with less power since long before the invention of internet p*rnography and second off, p*rn tends to function as something of a scapegoat for conservative Christians. #churchtoo
If the problem is p*rn, then the problem can’t possibly be our homophobic, white supremacist complementarian theology, you see. The problem is always “out there” and not “in here.” #churchtoo

1. While there hasn’t been much recent media attention to the #ExposeChristianSchools hashtag that went viral in January, the discussion continues, along with #ExposeChristianHomeschooling and threads on primary sources. I want to share some highlights and ideas in this thread.
2. Why do Christian schools need exposing? Short answer: the Christian Right has radicalized the GOP and is in power. It is the single greatest threat to democracy and human rights in America today. And private schools and homeschooling are part of its long-term plan.
3. To understand how Christian Reconstructioists/Dominionists played and play an active role in creating evangelical school and homeschooling curricula as a means of radicalizing children and mobilizing them to impose theocracy, read @julieingersoll's book Building God's Kingdom.

What is the victims responsibility?

To recover choice.
To find voice.
To restore the ruins.
To do the hard work of healing.

Don’t you DARE tell a victim it is his/her “responsibility” to tell the story.

It shows you are uniformed at best and utterly obtuse at worst. 🤨
Do you know how long it can take to do the hard hard work of healing what someone else smashed????

Years, I tell you.
Years.

Cowards look at the courageous and ask for more.

Why?

They are COWARDS. 👊🏻

1. Alright, let’s unpack in some more detail what’s wrong with the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee’s recommendations in response to the concerns @jdgreear raised about sexual abuse in particular churches.

#Exvangelical #ChurchToo #EmptyThePews #SundayMorning
2. The SBC’s Executive Committee recommends making clear that “the Convention does not, and will not, cooperate with a church that clearly evidences indifference to addressing the crime of sexual abuse.”

This *sounds* good, but much hinges on what’s meant by “clearly evidences.”
3. Things quickly get iffy, defensive, and then downright dubious with respect to the meaning of “clearly evidences.” Note how quickly the Executive Committee’s moves to emphasize not presuming guilt, as opposed to framing things in terms of taking accusations seriously.

One reason we have denominations - SBC, PCA, UMC, etc - is so you can find a church most closely adhering to your understanding of Scripture. Joining a church you disagree with on a major doctrinal issue and expecting them to change is goofy. #ChurchToo #MeToo

~ A Thread ~
Since the @HoustonChron published their distrubing article documenting abuse in the #SBC, I've seen quite a number of people trying to say that "If the SBC had women pastors this would not happen." As a survivor (#MeToo #ChurchToo) I find this extremely insulting. Here's why:
1. Taking advantage of a tragedy in order to push a social or political agenda is tacky. You want female pastors? That's fine. But you chould join a church that ordains women. However, when you join that church, don't be shocked when you find abuse there too. It's everywhere.
