A few people have DMed me about career advice as in "How do I get started in statistics?" I'm not where I want to be in life yet! But I have switched fields *multiple* times. So here are my tips on moving from insider to outsider ...
#epitwitter #statstwitter #datascience
1. Google a few people who started where you are and got to where you want to be. Look at their resume, work backwards and copy what they did. (This doesn't always work, especially if you are the first person like you.)
2. Find a person who's where you want to be. Tell them your background honestly. If they tell you that you aren't suited to their industry, ignore that for now. Get them to name one concrete gap that you have. Fill the gap. If you don't know how, then ask. Repeat as needed.

#SDSS2019 @gdequeiroz do people need to be on Twitter to be a part of #datascience community? How do we include people who are not on twitter?
#SDSS2019 @AmeliaMN joined twitter one day apart of first opening #rstats. She encourages people to at least open a twitter account and follow people.
#SDSS2019 @dataandme ecosystem of spaces approach: different fora that exist are good for different types of interactions -- think @StackOverflow @StackStats; @RStudio created an online community; there are people who actively contribute to @GitHub

With it, I plan to share a relevant experience I've never publicly discussed and I will offer ideas of action steps.

I hope you'll to read this thread, share what's happened, and act.

So I heard about a really bad take today, that things that are available free online aren't good enough to be worth money.

To counteract that rubbish call, here I tender a list of free, online #rstats books that I recommend above paid ones #OER
This list (of course) begins with @djnavarro's Learning statistics with R. Want a brilliant, approachable entry to both statistics and #rstats when you have no prior background, I can recommend nothing else.
Got less of a psych focus and coming from a #DataScience angle, well you must read @hadleywickham & @StatGarrett's #R4DS. It has it's own supportive community (@R4DScommunity) that you should check out also. #rstats

DataCamp quietly published a "community" post today, in which they admit an executive sexually assaulted ("uninvited physical contact") an employee.… #Python #rstats #datascience #MeToo
this post is nauseating. it can barely bother to be contrite. missing from the list of actions the company has taken are:
- any consequences for the perpetrator/executive
- anything the company has done to make things right for the employee.

#Python #rstats #datascience #MeToo
when a male tech executive (unless i'm mistaken, all of DataCamp's executives in October 2017 were male) abuses an employee, he gets a personal coach. what does the employee get?

Racism is not just a set of discriminatory actions; racism (and racial capitalism) is hardwired into very #infrastructures of our daily lives, shaping who breezes through life with clean, potable water and who lives without ‘universal’ public services. A thread.
In the Annals of @theAAG, @shiloh_deitz and I explore domestic water provision in the USA and expose its racialized, classed, and political nature. Yep, we do the entire country. We run the @ipums numbers. We make the maps. We bring the facts.…
Myth: Public water service is 100% universal in the USA. Fact: Nearly 1.5 million occupied households the US lack complete plumbing (water + sewerage) in their homes. That’s equivalent to the nation’s fifth largest city. A city of the plumbing poor. #waterinsecurity

Last month a friend asked me "what's the best resource you've read thus far on human decision-making?" 1/
After thinking about it, I decided to recommend her one of the first such resources I ever encountered, seven years ago: Doug Hubbard (@hubbardaie)'s How to Measure Anything. 2/…
While I don't agree with every word of it, How to Measure Anything is quite possibly the most important and useful book I've ever read on any topic. Here's why. 3/

Hello all #dataviz fanatics! It’s time to kick off our #datavizbook #epibookclub for @kjhealy’s new book, Data Visualization.

Remember, if your book hasn’t arrived yet or you’re waiting on the library, you can read it here:

#epitwitter #datascience
This week, we’re reading the Preface and Chapter 1: Look at Data.

I’ll post some highlights from each and then I hope you’ll chime in with your thoughts, comments, questions, etc.
In the Preface we get a nice overview of the goal of this book: the why and how of good data visualization for beginners, including practical applications in R with ggplot2.

The book doesn’t assume any prior knowledge of R, & covers everything #dataviz from scatterplots to maps.

Also: Retweeting this in order to avoid spamming this thread and getting blocked again. I will continue here. @woonomic
What a mess.. I just noticed that most of the tweets do not seem to be viewable from the outside -but only for myself- due to the autoblock. Copy paste below in order to create a coherent structure/thread.

Hoping this does not happen again when I write everything on my own wall.
Related to your claim that [M = PQ/Vu + I/Vi].

First issue: Why do you over complicate things by splitting up the 'utility economy' and 'investment economy' when you're interested in the aggregate network valuation?

Saturday Keynote at #ODSCWest Carrie Grimes Bostock - Data Science & Automated Decision Making. Automation has inputs, model(s) and potential outputs for action.
What is the goal of your models? Interpretability is important, but not the only thing. Other measures exist, but understanding your model is important to prevent outcomes, override recommendations, and to connect models to other systems - or stacks of models & systems. #ODSCWest
Example: placing racks in the Santa Clara data centre. Considerations, restrictions on space, power, future use of space, etc. Also: People install racks. They need to be able to intervene based on info that the placement model doesn't have. #ODSCWest

Effective #data-driven teams: different in existing organizations than start-ups. Need to find the best places to build in data value without overturning everything else. Challenges: personal-level analytics, resource allocation, security, privacy. #ODSCWest
Business & data teams will see problems differently. Data teams need to be comfortable with trade-offs in business. Metrics can be ill-defined. Speed can be better than perfection. Important to understand adequate accuracy of models. #ODSCWest Oh yeah, and security.

#DigitalLiteracy - Why? Effective work today requires a lot of associated learning. @linuxfoundation @github #VersionControl #Visualization -- continuous learning is critical. Optimal tools & processes are probably not the ones you are using now (Matlab vs. Scikit-Learn)
Need an evolving understanding for what tools are available today to get your work done. If you want your business people to work with your #datascience team, they need to understand what data is and what it can do. Also helps to avoid chasing buzzwords and bling.
