Miami Herald partners with Channel4 and studies their Cambridge Analytica database leak from 2016 and conclude that its voter deterrence campaign was effective in Florida. #DeterringDemocracy #TheGreatHack miamiherald.com/news/politics-…
Amazing interview with a GOP activist on how they justify their Black vote deterrence campaigns.
Couched in language to appease skeptics and address controversies around the efficacy of political advertising more broadly, there is some basic evidence here in the C4 leak that is difficult to dismiss as “snake oil” —again, CA/SCL was not *magical* but it was also not nothing.

Last night actually happened. It hurt. It was abusive. It was an emotional assault. It was what a cornered scared wild animal does. It was the death throes of antiquated thinking. Joe got bum rushed, he knew it was coming, but it still stings the senses to see it play out.
Imagine for a second that the wicked witch was real. Imagine the terror you might feel when you see her literally melt in front of you. It’s not a pleasant thing. There is yelling. There is violent hand waving, there is destruction. All on display last night.
Last night we saw the witch get wet. trump didn’t do that for him. His own people are saying it was a bit much. He didn’t do it for the votes. He didn’t even do it for money. He did it for the distraction. He is a weapon of mass distraction. And he needs a big one.

The way Trump wins The White House again is by suppressing the vote of moderates, so his base can carry the day. His debate/election strategy is about making these ordinary folk feel politics is just such a mess that they can't be bothered to vote. #DeterringDemocracy
His strategy is not about persuading people to vote for him - it is about persuading people who might vote for the other guy, but aren't all that bothered, to just stay home instead. Turn the debates into a shambolic mud-slinging match, and that's what you achieve.
This approach will be backed up by targeted social media adverts to certain demographics to specifically lower their enthusiasm and deter their vote. In 2016, Trump did this with the black community and turnout fell by 25% in mainly black districts. #DeterringDemocracy

You must watch the couple in Wisconsin, the husband is anti-Trump, the wife is pro-Trump. The moment when she sees her own data profile is gold. #DeterringDemocracy #TheGreatHack #DataRights
channel4.com/news/how-trump… via @krishgm
The two seminal moments of @Channel4News exposé are when the Black WI voter learns she was targeted for deterrence, she exclaims it makes it her want to vote even more. When Trumpy mom realizes she’s under invasive voter surveillance is the complement.
Transparency and visibility dissolves the effect. The minute voters can see their profiles, the power of this data collapses. This is why politicians and strategists will resist us winning our #datarights.

🚨#DeterringDemocracy - Part 2🚨

Yesterday, we revealed Trump's 2016 campaign strategy to deter 3.5 million Black Americans from voting.

Tonight: we show how the campaign targets millions of white voters - and activates their fears over law and order.
We report from Kenosha, where Trump recently visited - telling voters he was the man to stop the rioting and racial division.

At the time, many commentators pointed to opinion polls suggesting it didn’t move the dial very much.
But we know that his last campaign targeted its messages at specific voters in key states - who have concerns about law and order.

Tonight, we speak to the voters Trump hoped to persuade - and find out how the recent messaging about riots has influenced them.

New reporting has exposed the ways in which the Trump campaign used targeted digital ads to intentionally and methodically deter Black Americans from voting. This is twenty-first century voter suppression and must be countered. #DeterringDemocracy
channel4.com/news/revealed-…
Netflix's 'The Social Dilemma' made clear the frightening power that social media and its tech overseers have on our lives. Now we see that same power wielded to suppress Black turnout. It’s old-fashioned voter suppression with shiny new tools.
The Trump team disproportionately marked Black Americans for “Deterrence” and fed them ads designed to keep them home from the polls. Some 3.5 millions Black Americans were marked as “Deterrence.” Remember that only tens of thousands of votes handed Trump the Electoral College.

REVEALED: Trump’s election campaign wanted to deter millions of Black Americans from voting in 2016.

The ‘Deterrence’ project can be revealed after Channel 4 News obtained the database used by Trump's digital campaign team. #DeterringDemocracy

channel4.com/news/revealed-…
Millions of Americans in key battleground states were separated into eight categories, so they could be targeted with tailored ads online.
One of the categories was named ‘Deterrence’, which was later described publicly by Trump’s chief data scientist as containing people the campaign “hope don’t show up to vote”.

I'm sorry did you just say the 2016 Republican presidential campaign sought to ACTIVELY PREVENT Black America's from voting? Because that should trigger a congressional investigation.
The intricacies and breadth of what Republicans, FB, qnd cambridge analytica and similar teams got up to in 2016 is just dizzying and breathtaking.

Algorithmic Injustice for literal real.
