NEW: Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes - who was just found guilty of seditious conspiracy - told the Jan. 6 committee that roughly **20 percent** of his right-wing militia worked in law enforcement. @TexasTribune…
@TexasTribune Rhodes said that, at its peak, the Oath Keepers had about 40,000 dues-paying members.

That means 8,000 law enforcement officers were members, if we're using his estimate that they account for 20 percent of members. #January6thhearings…
Rhodes' interview with the January 6 committee sheds new light on the makeup of the Oath Keepers. Previous leaks have shown that there were quite a lot of law enforcement involved.…

This raid of #MarALago is a jaw-dropping, mind blowing, hair- raising, eye-popping moment: the home of the former president #DonaldTrump raided by the FBI. An astonishingly striking move by an Attorney General hitherto known for being overly cautious
You would have to believe that the AG, #MerrickGarland knew what the Feds were looking for. And every i and every t would have been dotted and crossed before this raid would have taken place
The politics of the #DonaldTrump raid is complicated. The #January6thHearings has been devastating for Trump’s reputation - but, but, but. This could make him a martyr, and fire up a base that had started to drift away

I’m a bit frustrated with people on the Left and also the Trumpist crowd regarding their reactions to today’s excellent #BretBaier interview on @FoxNews with Rep #LizCheney. So, a quick 🧵 to remind Americans about the proper role of journalism.

@BretBaier @Liz_Cheney
2. A journalist — and Bret is a very good one — is tasked with gathering information via questioning and fact-finding. Some questions may be challenging. But in asking challenging, but fair, good faith questions, the journalist is serving the truth, the public, and also the ->
3. … interviewee. The interviewee has the opportunity to answer questions many in the public want to know. A good journalist asks tough, but fair questions, and then allows the interviewee to answer them. Then, if there is fact-checking that must be done, the journalist can ->

@January6thCmte #January6thHearings @edbott @MacFarlaneNews Like most, I laughed at "Hawlin' Ass" Hawley's run through the Capitol, but it got me thinking. I have wondered, for example, where the traitor leaders were - Rudy, Cohen, Flynn, Stone, Bannon. Why weren't THEY at the

Some thoughts on last night’s #January6thHearing: It’s always striking to be reminded of how leading GOP politicians like Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy publicly acknowledged Trump’s culpability immediately after the attack. And look where the Republican Party is now.
It obviously wasn’t enough for them to actually impeach or break with Trump in any meaningful way. But there was a brief moment of uncertainty, of Republican leaders and conservative elites being rattled, immediately after January 6. So, what happened?
Republicans quickly rallied behind Trump: They first acquitted him, then they started obstructing every attempt to hold him accountable, and now many are running on his Big Lie. The few who broke with Trump have been marginalized, ostracized.

Thompson opens "season finale" of #January6thHearing by talking about all the ways Trump was alerted it was over, but didn't act for 187 minutes on Jan 6 as his supporters sacked the Capitol
"there can be no doubt that he commanded the mob, a mob he knew was armed, violent and angry, to march on the Capitol to try and prevent the peaceful transfer of power," Thompson says. "There needs to be accountability"

Thread 1/10

We need to talk about the elephants in the room, Sen. Manchin and the DOJ..
This may be upsetting to hear. It was upsetting for me to write.
First: Senator Manchin is a selfish guy who has his financial interests at heart....
He does represent an absolutely essential function. He keeps the gavel and the agenda out of Mitch McConnell and the gop's hands.
We can NOT overlook the fact that we are NOT in the majority. The Senate is indeed a 50-50 tie with VP Harris the tie-breaking vote.

I asked experts if Dominion Voting Systems could now sue Trump.

Backdrop: #January6thHearings revealed Trump was well informed that accusations were false.

Upshot: Makes for a powerful case of #Defamation.

Could sue for over a billion $$.

2. First Amendment living legend, Floyd Abrams:

“Dominion would have an extremely powerful libel case against him. Statements Trump made about the company were extraordinarily defamatory, provably false and enormously harmful.”…
3. Professor @zahr_said (@UWSchoolofLaw):

“Holding Mr. Trump legally liable for defamation would … provide significant public and institutional censure that could herald a change in our legal system’s apparent tolerance of outright misinformation”…

Will Bunch: The Jan 6th Committee has been really good at drumming up public interest. I've seen how Repubs have turned politics into a show.
Rick: That's why I think this is all Liz Cheney, using the Repub media playbook.
Will Bunch: I think Clarence & Ginni Thomas are Exhibit A in other things that can be done in addition to taking down Trump. The hearings are a show but they're a show telling the truth.
Will Bunch: It's easy to get cynical & think that nothing will bring Trump down but I see these hearings are making headway in peeling people away from Trump.

Some thoughts on today’s #January6thHearings: A tale of two very different halves for me - but both evoking a sense of dread and acute threat. Trump brought carnage. Unless he is held to account, he will bring a lot more, and the damage will be irreparable.
The first part centered on that December 18 meeting between Trump’s outside team and his White House lawyers: What an absolutely bizarre scene – nothing anyone would have accepted as remotely plausible, had it been presented in a movie or a novel. Trumpism as farce.
And then there were all these ludicrous conspiracists, extremist grifters, and unhinged rightwing activists echoing Trump’s call for a march on DC – what an utterly bizarre spectacle it all was, in so many ways the fitting crescendo to the Trump experience.

New 🔥🔥: Jericho March organizers quickly pivoted to promote the #Jan6th Trump rally at the Capitol within days after a late night impromptu meeting where Sidney Powell, Gen. Michael Flynn, and Patrick Byrne were snuck into the White House to meet President Trump. #Jan6Hearings
On Dec 12th, 2020 a Trump rally to protest Stop the Steal of the 2020 election (in their minds) was held in Washington DC called the Jericho March... also sometimes referred to as the 2nd Million MAGA March. General Michael Flynn was the keynote speaker at the event.
The Jericho March was also co-promoted by #1LoudVoice & included other speakers that have since gained notoriety 4 their involvement at the Jan6th Capitol Insurrection such as Stewart Rhodes, Ali Alexander & Alex Jones. Over 800+ people have since been arrested for Jan6th crimes.
