It should be a training experience so when you start you know relatively little about research and supervision but by the time you finish you not only have a thesis you have learned how to run your own future studies and support others to do so, ethically and effectively. But

In most cases even basic research skills aren’t taught and that’s why the PhD is so stressful. People aren’t supported to get their research done or navigate academia. Meaning they get distressed, some leave, others continue but lacking core skills. So the problems perpetuate.
The whole time we keep bleating about academic mental health while doing remarkably little about it. And absolutely nothing about supervision and tuition for undergraduate or postgrads. With all that happening it’s not surprising people are struggling and unhappy.

This database should be for the network you’re building to inform and advance your research. Keeping track of who you’re approaching, whether they’re interested or ready to join in, and in what capacity, helps track the time you’re spending and who is an ally or an obstruction.
It can be especially useful if you are needing to justify to supervisors, bosses or funders how long research is taking. It can also be a good way to track what you share (which can help if you fear other potential contacts are not reliable or trustworthy).

Got a deadline? It might be for a paper, grant application, conference application. Put the deadline of when work needs submitting in your diary.
Next, work backwards, scheduling key tasks (e.g. training on how to write a grant proposal, researching what goes into your grant bid)
These need to be specific and realistic. If you have a paper submission deadline when you plan tasks to achieve it this needs to be broken into actionable sections. (So you *don't* schedule a paper submission deadline only to put into your diary 'write paper' on one set day).

You're working on a project and you have a great idea - perhaps it's for extending a study or improving research or the way researchers are supported. You might be unsure whether it's okay to share your idea and what might happen if you do.
Before you share your idea
- note down what you think should happen
- ask who it brings in/leaves out
- consider how it extends/improves current work
- check if anyone else has done similar (to help stack up your claims)
- briefly note what your idea/proposal is (write it down)
