Once upon a time, (actually this has happened twice that I know of for a certain fact), a campaign received stacks and stacks of volunteer-handwritten #PostcardsToVoters mailed to them in bundles from all over the country. They hadn't asked for these cards.

But, well-meaning volunteers wrote them, put stamps on them, and then bulk shipped them to the campaign for them to be mailed locally to get local postmarks so that voters would think they'd been written by their neighbors.

These two campaigns didn't have time to proofread.

With all the critical work they had on their plates, they couldn't spare anyone to sort through the stacks of postcards to remove any that were illegible or contained problematic language or images.

So, discretely, instead of taking them to be mailed. They were disposed of.

Friends, our country is in trouble--Trump and his GOP enablers have to go, so it's time to take some action. I often see people post “I’m scared, but what can I do? I’m just one person!” Aside from donating money, there are tons of ways to help, even during Covid-19. Ready?
First, use your voice to contact congress. You can weigh in on Vote by Mail reform, Coronavirus Relief, or anything you want.

Tony The Democrat @DemocratWit, founder of Postcards To Voters, and a group of his volunteer writers. Postcard to Voters wrote #GOTV #postcardsToVoters for the State Supreme Court #elections in #Wisconsin today. His thoughts:
“This morning, Wisconsinites awaken to a reality where their elected officials bring a somber new dimension to the word deadlock. Democratic Governor Evers and the Republican leaders of the State Legislative branch were
unable to reach agreement on how to safeguard the health of voters and poll workers. Their inability to find any common ground is akin to not only throwing out the baby with the bath water, but also the wash basin, the soap, and the towel.

The election is April 7.

"But, it's a primary, right?"

You can write #PostcardsToVoters.

"Why remind Republicans to go vote?"

This group only writes to Democrats.

"I don't know what to write."

They give you the message to write.

"But, it's an entire state. What I would be able to write would barely be a drop in the bucket to make a real difference."

It all adds up. Since they started writing to WI, they've assigned 29,175 addresses to 1,700+ volunteers just like you!

"Wow, that's a lot!"

"Tony, why are you asking us to write for someone in a very red part of Georgia who has no chance of winning instead of writing to purged voters in WI or for people like Amy McGrath? My group wants better reasons to write."

This is a question that we receive regularly.

In one form or another, some of our best writers and volunteer group leaders ask us this. It's picking up with regularity as we get further into the 2020 frenzy. So, let me try to address the different points and you can let me know if these answers suffice.

Q: Why do we write in red areas where our Dem candidate has such an uphill battle to win?

A: If we have writing capacity in an otherwise clear calendar, I feel it is a responsible thing to offer as one of the postcarding choices. Being as forthright as possible explaining...

We are 3 years in and have the next 11 months to change the course of our country, things have been this bad before even worse but now is our time. Here is my thread on 2020. Accompanying my points with a few #Postcardstovoters
1. The Demo in Democracy is people, that means you.
2. The Blue wave is people, each of our efforts matter.
3. Our democracy cannot depend on just one person being electable, it has to be many people being electable.
4. Government is not not just the President, it is our library boards, our state legislatures, prosecutors and members of Congress. All of them are important.
5. If we have the capacity to, we need to donate to candidates we believe in, especially at that very local level.

ORGANIZATION: Hi Tony! #PostcardsToVoters does great work!

TONY: On behalf of the team, thanks!

O: We have an exciting and important project to propose to you for PTV.

T: Great! Tell me more.

O: You know that state with hundreds of thousands of voters about to be purged?

T: Yes. It’s all over the news.

O: Would you organize your volunteers to write to those hundreds of thousands of addresses urging the voters to take action to restore their voter registrations?

T: Well, let me understand a little more first.

O: Okay.

T: Are any of these records for voters who may have moved away?

O: Yes, that is a certainly a part of the list.

T: Ok. Can we match the purged records to the USPS National Change of Address file?

O: What’s that?

T: It’s a service offered by the USPS to businesses.

Why do I do this?

I don’t know how long this will be so bear with me.

A mass email went out three hours ago to some 58,000 email addresses of our #PostcardsToVoters volunteers. As expected, we get a flood of responses. Some of them hit REPLY and those go to me.

We’ve been writing in support of Louisiana’s Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards since last Tuesday (?) and we have until this Saturday since the LA runoff election is Nov 16 and this Monday is a postal holiday.

If you know anything about JBE, you know he is...

...exactly the kind of Dem who can win in the Deep South. I should know. From the age of maturity, I’ve lived and voted as a Democrat in TX, AZ, and GA. (I know that AZ is not part of the South. I’m just giving my credentials as a liberal in unfriendly territory.)

Trump - Less than 3 weeks ago:

REPORTER: Does it concern you that many people saw that tweet as racist + that white nationalist groups are finding common cause with you on that point?

TRUMP: "It doesn't concern me because many people agree with me."
Trump: "I will do whatever is necessary to stop an invasion of our country. That's what it is."

Trump: "I don't, really. I think it's a small group of people that have very, very serious problems."

As you weigh in on the latest American gun deaths, confirm that you vote.

Not just for President, U.S. Senate, Congress, and Governor. Confirm that you also vote for School Boards that implement policies, pass budgets, oversee hiring, and set priorities for school safety.

Confirm that you also vote in every city council race for the same reasons at a city level.

Confirm that you also vote for your county governing body for the same reasons.

And for Sheriff, District Attorney, Judges, and so on.

Every elected official on your ballots...

...has some responsibility in how safe from gun violence your community can become. Some positions more than others. But all of them have power. And it’s your vote which gives them the power.

Every election is your chance to pass the power to someone new who will do better.

Happy Anniversary to our #FLDemsVBM Campaign!

A year ago, we conducted a pilot program with the objective to determine if sending handwritten #PostcardsToVoters to Dems in FL to encourage them to sign up for vote by mail (VBM) would result in an increase in signups.

One of the pilot counties was Pasco County. Starting July 31st, 2018, #PostcardsToVoters volunteers from across the country mailed handwritten postcards to Pasco Democrats who were not already signed up to vote by mail. The content and creativity on the postcards varied, but

...all postcards had the same three bits of information:

1. Skip long lines and vote in comfort at home.
2. Sign up easily for Vote By Mail by calling toll-free: 1-800-851-8754
3. When Democrats vote by mail, Democrats win!

It's easy to celebrate those on the front lines. Those willing and able to speak in front of hundreds, sometimes thousands. Those capable gitterdone types. We applaud and support their work always, don’t we?
We also must celebrate those in the back. The people who have anxieties or time constraints that keep them from being the “leader.” They are quietly calling Congress, having tough conversations with friends and family, addressing local Dem issues.
They are writing #PostcardsToVoters, often alone, spending their own cash to support elections in locations far from their home. They may not be organizing or giving speeches, but they are just as important, just as inspiring.

Over the past 10 weeks, with help from my family and friends, I have written 881 #postcardstovoters for 25 candidates from 10 states. I am grateful to @DemocratWit, @emyryly @Marypostcards and many, many others who have supported what for me was a VERY heavy lift. #VoteBlue
Today I will write my last 19 #postcardstovoters of this election cycle. I am writing 19 more #postcards so that my total count reaches a nice round 900 postcards. Was it enough? Is it ever enough? I cannot answer that question. Only time will tell. #VoteToSaveAmerica
Being a part of this #postcardstovoters movement I've witnessed an incredible wave of Goodwill and support from other hopeful people who still believe in Democracy and the power of putting a pen to paper. I have been filled with heart filled optimism. #BlueWave

Today was hard. The past week has been hard. The past few months have been hard. The constant barrage has made me sad, angry, & scared for our country. The past 18 months have been frustrating & disheartening. But I'm also finding hope, & you can too. Here's how.
A) I've been deciding on some concrete actions I can take to effect change, like:
- Working to promote voter registration among the students at the med school where I'm on faculty & among the residents I work with
- Writing even more #PostcardsToVoters (through @DemocratWit)
- Finding ways to volunteer with the @azdemparty &/or for @RepSinema's campaign for Senate that fit into my busy schedule (I'm sure it's possible! Somehow?)
- Donating to @kyrstensinema's campaign for Senate, & to @emilyslist, @swingleft, & @RAICESTEXAS
- Phone banking

As requested, I'm putting the NEWLY UPGRADED instructions for this #ProtectMueller #Resistance project into a text format. This covers 1) why bother doing this, 2) how to find the donors' addresses on the FEC website, and 3) how to send a postcard to your list of donors.
1/ We’re getting close to a constitutional crisis here, so we really need to try something new to stop this. Of course, keep calling Congress–but it’s become painfully obvious that the GOP–the people with the power to stop this–only respond to their base and their donors.
2/ So we’re going to speak to their masters & send a BLIZZARD of postcards to their big donors to remind them what is at stake before we reach a point of no return, before Trump crosses the Rubicon (just Google it) #Indivisible #PostcardsToDonors #PostcardsToVoters #TheResistance
