In which the top diplomat of the United States’ closest ally and neighbor - a country globally renowned for its politeness - draws a highly pointed analogy to Adolf Hitler. nytimes.com/2018/06/09/mag…
Whatever you think of this analogy, this much seems clear. Canada’s top diplomat did not just blurt out this painstakingly articulated analogy - featuring a memorized quotation - to a reporter.

This says something about the state of the U.S.-Canadian bilateral relationship.
Last year, Trudeau used his UN General Assembly address to speak about Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) about its oppression of indigenous peoples.

I asked him if he’d recommend a TRC for the United States post-Charlottesville. courthousenews.com/canadas-trudea…
At the time, Trudeau politely ducked the question, but he said he would generally recommend the truth commission vehicle. (Read the article.)

I wonder if he would be as diplomatic if asked the same question today.
By the way, the reason for Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission? A family separation regime for indigenous children that the TRC determined to be a form of “cultural genocide.”

The commission’s report: courthousenews.com/wp-content/upl…
Canada’s family separation program, from the 19th century, via the report.
This history continued for quite some time, with the Canadian government only recently making amends, admirably, on the international stage.

The commission’s report is long, but worth a read and shockingly relevant.
The headlines this weekend are rightly focusing on trade between our two countries.

Some focus should also be paid to Trump and Trudeau’s vastly different approaches to the policy of family separation: perpetration vs. atonement.
