I published the story despite a lawyer (hired by Thrush) urging my employer to look into my personal relationships. We interpreted the pre-publication letter a threat. 
We didn’t hesitate. This was the POINT of the story. Thrush behaves badly and then tries to cover it up by by smearing the woman.
The big surprise for me was that a crew of NYT rushed in to help him out. Here’s a summary from a source who spoke to @annamerlan:

I decided to speak about this because there are still big unanswered questions about how to handle #metoo cases. Let’s not kid ourselves about how far we’ve actually come.
