Last year I wrote a story about NYT reporter Glenn Thrush and his history of misconduct. At the time, I decided to let the story speak for itself. I did no interviews. vox.com/platform/amp/p…
Today you can read @annamerlan’s report on what it was like for me to write about a prominent man in my field. I sat for an on the record interview. jezebel.com/the-reporter-w…
I published the story despite a lawyer (hired by Thrush) urging my employer to look into my personal relationships. We interpreted the pre-publication letter a threat.
We didn’t hesitate. This was the POINT of the story. Thrush behaves badly and then tries to cover it up by by smearing the woman.
The big surprise for me was that a crew of NYT rushed in to help him out. Here’s a summary from a source who spoke to @annamerlan:
I hired lawyer, ultimately, who sent the NYT a cease a desist letter.
I hired a lawyer to send the NYT a cease and desist letter. Their investigation ended the next day. (I don’t know if the timing was related or not.)
I decided to speak about this because there are still big unanswered questions about how to handle #metoo cases. Let’s not kid ourselves about how far we’ve actually come.
I’m a person with a decent amount of power. I’ve got an employer standing by me. I’ve got a credible resume in journalism. And still, my sex life, real or imagined, was used against me.
The media is doing groundbreaking work to tackle the long-ignored story of sexual harassment. We’d never write off or attack a source because the accused friends say she’s a slut. Let’s do the work in our own house.
