Just finished touring Casa Padre where nearly 1500 undocumented immigrant children are being housed. Largest licensed facility in the country & it used to be a Wal Mart. Vast majority of kids came unaccompanied into US but they're nearly at capacity because of family separations
Facility houses boys 10-17yrs old. Rooms are meant to sleep four but now have to sleep five because of an influx of children. Every child is assigned a clinician to help with any mental health issues including separation trauma.
Children we saw had a mix of reactions when they saw our group of reporters walk in. Many smiled & greeted us w/ "hola" or "buenas." On average these kids are spending more than 50 days in these facilites-but some are being separated from their parents for more than 6 mos
Children here are offered only 2 hours of outdoor time a day (am/pm). Inside they're provided 3 meals plus 2 snacks. They also have access to video games, pool tables, civics & esl classes, and a move theater that was converted from a Wal Mart loading dock.
We did not see any cage like partitions. And there are several staffers. Still I can't imagine what it's like for a 10 year old boy to enter this facility after being separated from a parent & now surrounded by nearly 1500 strangers in a converted Wal Mart w/ almost no windows.
We were not given access to speak to any of the children. Though many did smile at us as we toured the facility.
