As old followers will know, during the EU referendum in the U.K. I summarised my (emotional) view as being “A proud Brit and a committed European”. One can quibble about the meaning here but I think it’s a reasonable one sentence tag
The U.K. - or rather the Conservative party - has had now 2 years struggling to find clear consensus of what happens next, and today looks almost as chaotic as 2 years ago
It seems bizarre to me that the people who want to not be in a European super state they fear can’t play the long game and stick to their convictions; soft Brexit / EEA might bind U.K. but puts clear blue water to Eurozone integration. Sensible with a 20,50 to 100 year view
The other sensible (and far preferable to me) option was the status quo - in EU, not in Euro. There are principled objections (baroque processes, democratic deficit) but no weirder than House of Lords + West Lothian question
So, as a proud Brit, this level of political chaos and inept, incoherent, school boy behaviour by (mainly) Tory politicians *really* annoys me
During these 2 years of chaos we’ve managed also to cause serious distress to the millions of EU citizens in the U.K. and seriously tarnish our liberal, tolerant reputation
As a Brit I apologise to the EU citizens here - friends, coworkers and colleagues and I guess ask for yet more forebearance. It feels like this could be the spasm before we settle somewhere - but I have given up trying to predict this.
