Career Counterintelligence Officer explains how they splinter/fracture the unity of groups: they pretend to be supporters of the movement while targeting group members who have gripes, then working to exacerbate those concerns, in order to exploit them:

"The way to figure this out - pay attention to the people who are constantly trying to undermine, even just a little bit. People who are trying to sow the seeds of doubt.. they pretend they support your cause but they're constantly injecting little... [seeds of doubt]"
