Moi moi! I’ll be tweeting more about language today. This year I started to learn Irish Sign Language (ISL) and it’s been an amazing experience. Yesterday, for the first time, the Irish national anthem was performed in ISL. Check out the video!
ISL is another of Ireland’s indigenous languages. It was recognised in law at the end of 2017 after a 30 year fight by members of the Deaf community.
I attended a conference in Jyväskylä last year on minority languages where Sign Languages were heavily featured. At the opening event there was a Deaf choir who performed the Finnish national anthem in FSL for #Suomi100. It was truly a moving experience.
FSL is a constitutionally recognised language here in Finland. Finland was the third country to recognise a sign language in law back in 1995. FSL is apparently similar enough to Swedish Sign Language.
