new paper with @mhEspo and @hedwig_lee in @AMJPublicHealth : we use data from @fatalencounters to produce estimates of men's risk of being killed by police by race/ethnicity and county. Police kill about 3 men per day in the US. ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/10.2105/AJ…
Police kill between 1.9 and 2.4 Black men per 100,000 people per year, between 0.8 and 1.2 Latino men per 100,000 per year, and between 0.6 and 0.7 white men per year. Black men are at higher risk of being killed by police in all regions and metro types
Big cities comprise only about 1/3 of total killings, about 2/3 of all men killed by police are killed in suburbs, small cities, and rural counties. Risk is highest in large central metros, but it's far from the only place where risk is high
Black men are as much as 8 times more likely to be killed by police in some places (cities in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest). Latino men are at higher risk in many places
Police are responsible for about 8 percent of all homicides with adult male victims in the US. This ratio is highest in the mountain states (AZ, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, UT, WY) - police are responsible for 15 percent of adult male homicides there
in another working paper, we find that risk of being killed by police is also much higher for Black women and American Indian and Alaska Native women than for white women
The data from @fatalencounters captures nearly twice as many police killings as do official data sources. We need mandatory official data on any death involving police, and we need mandatory official data on all police use of force.
