Was told today my field science stories are only interesting to my friends. Hope that's not true, since my book's nearly done. Anyone want to read about sciencing while dodging narcos? Falling in a sewer before climate research in the Andes? Anyone? Bueller?❓

NB: I was talking online with someone I know in real life about issues finishing the book, & about feedback I had received from one of my mentors. I was a bit surprised too, since there isn't exactly a glut of stories on this subject.
The mentor's feedback is helpful and appreciated. The friend's, not so much.

In case you've come across a Chicken Little screaming that the Ring of Fire is going to be "set off" due to the Fiji quake, here are the currently erupting volcanoes in the area. Volcanoes are erupting all day, every day...somewhere. See? No need for alarm, just good #science.
If you download that app (Volcanoes & Earthquakes), you can zoom in and see volcanoes with lower levels of unrest, including dormant & extinct ones. Use knowledge to combat ignorance!
Also, in that picture the little circles are recent earthquakes. Knowledge is power, & makes you look good at dinner parties.

Major takeaway from running for Congress: Unless we reform campaign finance laws to eliminate dark money, the people we get to vote for will continue to largely be the last people we want to hold office.

The system is a runaway train, & it's plowing over honest, good people.
If you want to see what's driving the passage of legislation, follow the money trail. Lobbyists can serve a purpose in educating lawmakers about niche issues, but the way money is thrown around has corrupted that function of the role.
In order to raise enough money to run a legitimate, viable campaign, you need a network of wealth to tap into. The chicken/egg scenario at its worst. You have to have money to get endorsements, & you have to have endorsements to raise money. How does that work if you have a job?

Sitting here in Denver waiting for a new plane (yay for the pilot who refused a broken one), & enjoying video of our fun bison encounter after filming wrapped yesterday. Growing up in CO we visited bison farms on school trips, but this was new to my NYC colleagues! #nature
Yes, that growl is from the bison. It's the sound you get if a tiger and a cow got busy.

(This is why I'm not a biologist. I would have too much fun laughing at the animals.)

#Montenegro has the same population as Vermont--our 2nd least populous state with a mere 625k people. Montenegro is tiny and poor--median income of $18k.

We define day as the time taken by Earth to complete one rotation around its axis.
But with respect to what is the measurement made? 2/n
Since Earth is also revolving around Sun while it is rotating, it needs to rotate a little extra when rotation is measured w.r.t. sun (solar day) than a distant star (sidereal day)
