An unfortunate event happened in my home town which cost the lives of four suspected motorcycle snatchers. But for intervention by security forces things could have escalated into an all out communal killing, a short thread of the jungle justice that happens in ilisan Remo today
Went to see drop my car off to my cousin's place who needed it to run some errands this morning, on my way I noticed an unusual crowd of "hausa" people around Igovil gas station, my first thought was that an accident happened.
Got to my cousin's place close to the filling station and told him about the crowd of people and to my greatest shock he said "awon aboki merin Ni won pa si itun Iworu nitoripe won n'ja okada gba"... damn!
Apparently a bike man was robbed of his motorcycle last night and another was chased around by the robbers around 5:30am this morning but he managed to escape, the local vigilante group however had been on patrol all night in up of finding the "robbers".
Now here is the crazy part, a group of four "hausa" men who according to some people's account were coming from the mosque after the early morning prayer were stopped on suspicion of being the motorcycle snatchers, the face being unfamiliar to most people there
And the man who escaped their robbery attempt claimed to recognize them as those that tried to rob him, apparently on seeing that jungle justice was going to take place the perceived suspects tried to make for an escape.. TOO LATE
Three of them were burnt to death while the fourth was beaten beyond any hope of survival but the mob. A very unfortunate way to leave this earth, no one no matter their crimes should have to die this way.
Around 8am tensions began to rise, the victims were been identified and the "hausa" community felt (justifiably) that their own were murdered unjustly, I believe so too. Things were going to escalate any moment from now and apparently it will be murderous clashes...
between the hausa community and the indigenous community, sensing this, communications were sent to the police and Other security agents who promptly sent reinforcement to restore order and prevent situation from getting out of hand
Economic activities were grounded and movement restricted, a sober day full of unfortunate events. I am doing this thread to advocate to my fellow Nigerians on the need to shun jungle justice and let authorities take charge of things. The victims could have been thieves
...but killing them is never an option, and when you think there is very high possibilities that they are innocent you surely weep for humanity. Jungle justice is never an option.
Many thanks to the police for the prompt intervention.
