This is by far the worst way to defend Gunn. He said what he said and did what he did. The idea that only people of certain political polarities can destroy careers with online rage mobs is one of the most poisonous ingredients in this ugly stew.
Combine the Gunn saga with the New York Times racist editor, and you've got a major battle raging over whether leftist elites have special speech privileges, indulgences granted only to powerful people with the correct politics while free speech dwindles for all others.
Also, Hollywood codes of silence are what gave us the #MeToo saga. I thought the entire point of that movement was that damaging information about powerful stars and directors would no longer be suppressed.
