/ Jacksonville is reeling from three murders of black transgender women in the city this year. The crimes remain unsolved and the way the cops are handling the cases may only be making matters worse. propub.li/2KHwHOb
/ The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office repeatedly called the victims men and refused to use the names the women were known by, a practice known as “deadnaming.”
/ JSO, like most local law enforcement agencies, said it identifies homicide victims by the medical examiner’s report and the name and sex listed on a government-issued ID. But for trans folks, IDs often don’t reflect who they are.
/ Laws about updating a name or gender marker on an ID are inconsistent and confusing. In some states, trans people are required to have expensive surgeries or obtain a court order to update the gender marker on their ID.
/ In some states, judges have broad discretion to determine who should be allowed a gender marker change. They can even deny someone’s petition for not looking feminine or masculine enough that day.
/ @schwanksta and @lhwaldron examined every reported murder of a transgender person in the U.S. since January 2015 and found that in 74 out of 85 cases victims were deadnamed or misgendered by law enforcement.
/ Trans women across the country told us that when their loved ones are deadnamed by cops, it makes them lose trust in law enforcement.
/ Being a black trans woman in Jacksonville, after three unsolved murders of black trans women, can feel unbearable.
/ A spokesperson for JSO told us that the agency’s policy to identify victims by the name and sex listed on their ID has not changed, but Sheriff Mike Williams told a local news station that there had been a “lack of sensitivity” in the way the dept. referred to trans victims.
