One of my personal favorites during the Cuban Missile crisis. If the arrangement broke down, Robert Kennedy hints at a coercive strategy of escalation that includes nuclear weapons in Iran:
Iranian military weakness vexed Turkish (NATO) planners, worried about the Zagros invasion route. Leading to this gem:
So there was a study done on how to use man portable nuclear mines (cc: @arawnsley) to block mountain passes. Here are the results. McNamara loved the Turkish thinking (meeting was in Ankara) — but they were never deployed.
@arawnsley Turkish concerns about the dual key sharing arrangements influenced thinking about the NPT — and delayed signature (1967).
@arawnsley By 1977, Turkey (still not having ratified the NPT) saw ratification as a means to get funding for nascent nuclear research to help with the development of nuclear power. The sites selected: Mersin and Sinop.
Anyways, back to Cuban Missile Crisis: To assuage Turkish anxiety, in addition to the SLBM port call, US expedited F-104 delivery, making TuRAF one of the 1st NATO members to get the new fighter. Deployed as 141 & 142 filo in Akinci.
This was explicitly linked to the Turkish dissatisfaction (sorry) with the Jupiter removal in 1963
Why does this matter? The F-104G was dual capable; thus giving Ankara the option to carry and deliver US nuclear weapons stored, among other places, at Akinci airbase. That weapon, the B-61, is now being redesigned for deployment at its consolidated home in TR, Incirlik.
