New + significant research coming from DCN in a few hours => "It's nearly impossible to do anything digitally without Google collecting data on you" @CNNMoney ht @brianstelter money.cnn.com/2018/08/21/tec…
"The report was particularly concerned with the amount of 'passive data' collected by Google, which refers to information being gathered mostly without the consumers realizing it. The report claims 2/3 of data collected by G would be considered 'passive.'" adage.com/article/digita…

a link to the new Google Data Collection research which was causing google comms to frantically tweet @adage in the middle of the night. @dcnorg digitalcontentnext.org/blog/2018/08/2…
"Google is the world’s largest digital advertising company. It also provides the #1 web browser, the #1 mobile platform, and the #1 search engine worldwide. Google’s video platform, email service, and map application have over 1 billion monthly active users each." Android > 2b.
"Magnitude wise, Google’s servers communicated 11.6 MB of data per day (or 0.35 GB/month) with the Android device. The iPhone device communicated an order of magnitude less data to Apple servers than what the
Android device exchanged with Google servers."
"This experiment suggests that even if a user does not interact with any key Google applications, Google is still able to collect considerable information through its advertiser and publisher products."
always a good reminder here that Google pays off the most popular ad blocker to be whitelisted and out of coincidence I'm sure it also doesn't appear to block any of Google's user tracking.
study finds that more than 2/3 of Google's data collection happens "passively" which I would suggest is much less likely in line with consumer expectations.
here is a nice chart to illustrate the order of magnitude less data that Apple collects from an idle device, several orders less location data. And Apple is continuing to push bar higher here.
most people missed this @risj_oxford report but the point is Google managed to force consent and preserve its massive data collection apparatus after GDPR May 25 by essentially forcing last minute publisher "cooperation." cc @EU_EDPS @Buttarelli_G reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/sites/default/…
Truth isn't truth. 👀 "It’s hard for an Android mobile user to 'opt out' of location tracking. For example, on an Android
device, even if a user turns off the Wi-Fi, the device’s location is still tracked via its Wi-Fi signal."
"over 1 million mobile apps use AdMob, over 1 million advertisers use AdWords, over 15 million websites use AdSense, 30mil use GA" On a much related note, Facebook recently told @CommonsCMS @DamianCollins it can collect data off 8.4 million sites.
bottom-line, study reveals the level of sophistication and unique data collection practices of Google which are suffocating competition for the rest of the digital market. applaud Dr. Schmidt’s work in bringing a vigorous set of facts to the table for analysis by all parties.
The Google Force is strong, y’all. This is quite a rich protest considering Google’s tentacles of influence across think tanks, academia, conferences, government, friendly press and trade groups. How about Google talks about the research / facts... adage.com/article/digita…
