hoo boy, I finished To Walk The Night and I am having some Queer Feelings™️ about it.
Bark, the narrator, spends most of the story hating his friend’s wife. Like I said earlier, it’s not simple jealousy, but that’s a component.

[spoiler] He only gains sympathy for her when he realizes she is literally an alien whose love is doomed
She’s an outsider. One whose love will lead to the destruction of the handsome man who is its object. Pain is the bargain she makes with love.
Bark is also an outsider. He has no friends except Jerry. His only other significant relationships are with his mother and a sympathetic father figure. He has no real interest in anyone but Jerry.
Seeing her cry over The Little Mermaid, a story by a queer author, is when he first starts to understand her. But it’s not until Jerry dies and their grief is the same that he really GETS her.
My thoughts here aren’t super organized because DAMN this story did a number on me, but wow.
*lies on the floor and sniffles*
got that queer ache tonight
I need to go clean a toilet or something so I can recover.
