Sen. Bill Nelson: "Parts of FL has been enveloped in a green slime." When blooms go down fresh water streams and rivers, it meets up with the red tide, which appears periodically in the Gulf...but is then fueled by 'extra nutrients' in H20 causing supercharged bacteria.."
All manner of sea life are being killed, it's making people sick and its obviously, as a result, hurting businesses, he says.
In Stuart, FL, at the mouth of the St. Lucie River, Nelson says parents are worried over kids playing outside, biz owners don't know what it means for their bottom lines...the red tide has lasted in some areas for over 10 months.
Over 2,000 tons of dead fish and sea life have been removed from nearly 150 miles of FL's beaches. Dead manatees, a dead whale shark...the devastation is "horrifying," Nelson says.
