So, AMZN is about to top $1Tn ... shame Apple beat it first ... still, it won't be long before Amazon catches Apple.
... worth noting that Amazon is nearly a whole IBM (in market cap) ahead of Google. Not that I recommend using IBM as a metric given shrinkage. Still, it's quite remarkable how things have changed in the last decade. Poor big blue ... well, I'm sure the execs are minting it.
I did of course hear about one of those execs claiming companies would be bringing all their stuff in-house and how this would impact AWS revenue. Poor dears. I do wonder where they dig these people up from.
You just want to tell them they have no experience of the scale or problems, I can think of six $1bn+ private cloud efforts that have been swept under the carpet and they should start with something easy like building their own nuclear power plant to provide the electricity.
Of course they're often convinced in their own belief that they can do it and the half deluded reasons why they must. It's not worth the argument. Let them fail, let them retire and teach the younger generation to focus on meeting user needs.
Because users (whether public or business) generally care about the interaction with the service, what it does for them and hopefully whether it's secure. They don't give a hoot about the underlying electricity or infrastructure ... unless they're Walmart.
Of course, Walmart would have been a better unit alas the market cap gap between AMZN and Google is only close to half a Walmart. Still, I can wait until next year before I can use a full Walmart to illustrate the point.
In 2008 Walmart was 20x the revenue of Amazon, 6x market cap and a top 10 most valuable US companies. Today, a decade later, its revenue is 3x AMZN, it's 1/3 of the market cap and it has fallen off that list. AMZN has added over one whole Walmart in market cap this year alone.
