This claim by “economists” for free trade will come as a surprise to eg a U.K. law firm offering legal advice in its office in Vienna. (Not possible, as I understand it, for a non-EEA firm under Austrian law.)
Quite extraordinary that Martin Howe QC of @lawyers4britain - who is supposed to have contributed to this “report” - let a statement like that pass.

It’s often said that the SM in services is incomplete. That’s a fair point. But to say it doesn’t exist at all is grossly and irresponsibly wrong, and I’m afraid that Martin Howe QC and @lawyers4britain deserve Sam’s criticism here.
And @Howard_Goodall makes a good point here: try telling musicians that the single market in services doesn’t exist or that its loss will make no difference to their livelihoods.

Not happy phrasing by @EvanHD.
The interview was disappointing (and as @StevePeers points out there was plenty of good stuff on Twitter with which to knock gaping holes in the 30 “truths”).
I appreciate that time is limited. But trying to get a seasoned operator like Lilley to criticise Gove wasted time.

As said at the front, I helped with the legal aspects of this report.
Like all the choices that the U.K. has in front of it, an EEA/EFTA type arrangement involves trade-offs and political judgment about priorities. Views may fairly differ (and differ profoundly) about those.
Moreover, any way forward is going to be a second- or third- best option for many. It’s no use refusing to look at your second choice option because it’s not your first.

David is being generous about point 26 of the Lilley list of 30 “truths” about “no deal”.
In some areas it’s hard to see how the U.K. could continue to export food more than trivially to the EU on a “no deal”.

Economists for free trade say that China, India, the US and Japan have experienced greater growth in exports to the EU than the UK. Well that’s their economy. Shall we examine some UK export trade differentials over the last 20 years?
If we look at the difference between the seasonally adjusted value of exports between 1998 and 2018 we can see that the difference in those export values is greater for our exports to the European Union than any other market.
The fall in difference is quite marked after the first 17 countries. Starting with Mexico, there doesn't appear to be much evidence of growth in around 190 of our export markets.

I haven't read the full repot - life is too shot. Honestly, I couldn't even highlight everything they got wrong in the press release because it was taking too much time.
But this is an important moment to recognise. The ERG alternative Brexit plan isn't coming out. Johnson has no proposals to offer, just a series of lewd metaphors. This repot is all the hard Brexiters have got.

1. A thread on #trade and aid.

One of the first tangible benefits of #Brexit I've seen is the emerging reform of @DFID_UK where it is becoming more of an arm of trade policy than a state owned humanitarian NGO. I would like that to go much further and rethink trade.
2. I do not think we should be wasting too much effort on free trade deals largely because they are of questionable value and encourage inefficient value chains. Any work on tariffs should really be reserved for multilateral activity.
3. Instead we need DfID as the spearhead of our trade policy. There is no reason why we cannot pursue humanitarian goals and enhance our trade while we are at it. For a start we can do a lot with medicines and pharmacy products.
