Aden Hassan arrived in Ohio on Jan 19, 2017 as a Somali refugee, hopeful that he and his family could start a new life away from the violence they were fleeing. His mother Fatuma Diriye was supposed to join them soon after. 19 months later, she's still in a Kenyan camp 
My story traces all the reasons why Fatuma has been blocked - it started with Trump's travel ban, issued just a week after he took office. And since then, refugees like Fatuma have been directly targeted by new security reviews and layers of new vetting requirements
In an incident that hasn't been reported before, a working group convened by Trump found last year during a pause in refugee admissions that refugees from all countries could safely be allowed back in. But White House officials objected, and had a particular problem w Somalis
The White House objections led to a new security review of refugees from 11 specific countries, including Somalia. Admissions from those countries have never recovered
I also explore issues w how the FBI is vetting refugees: current/former officials and refugee experts say the FBI's vetting is holding up admissions from the same 11 countries targeted by the administration's extra review. That includes Iraqis who have helped the US in battle
One of those Iraqis is an interpreter who worked for the Army and has applied for admission as a refugee but has been repeatedly blocked. An Army veteran who worked with him and is outraged at his treatment said people like him "keep Americans from coming home in coffins."
