I'm running a lot these days, which means I'm listening to lots of good books as well.
Quick thread on some @audible recommendations:
1. Coddling of the American Mind by @JonHaidt - the first 'applied' Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy book I've read. About the rise of safe spaces and 'call-out culture' on American campuses. Easy to condemn these (I do), but the book goes out of its way to explain how we got here.
2. Fear by @bobwoodward_ - Honestly I didn't intend to read, thinking a few reviews covered the main bits. Wrong. The reviews brought up the salacious bits; this is a far more serious, policy-oriented book than I presumed. A Trump supporter would find much in here they'd like.
3. Sex & the Constitution by @stone_geoffrey - Brimming with insight, facts and history I was ignorant of. It's about laws re: obscenity, homosexuality and abortion. US-focused, but goes back to ancient Israel and Greece to give context. Granted, it's a weird book to run to ;)
4. Mistakes Were Made (but not by me) by Carol Tavris - a wide-ranging book on cognitive dissonance. Gets better with each chapter, with examples from politics, policing, law and love. Eye-opening. Easy to see others in it; the trick is to see your yourself, too.
5. Crashed by @adam_tooze - I'm only a few chapters in, but it's very good so far. Probably necessary to know a fair bit about banking and economics, but it's not as dense as other finance books.
6. How Not to Die by Michael Greger (@nutrition_facts) - a simple thesis: eat more whole, plant-based foods. Somehow remains interesting throughout. By far the most comprehensive thing on nutrition I've (almost) read.

I missed this piece by the indomitable @HannahAllam for @BuzzFeed on an American Muslim religious leader facing accusations of bad behaviour. buzzfeednews.com/article/hannah… It's an important topic to get into - without falling into bigotry - and Allam does it well. #Thread
All too often, infractions and abuses by American Muslim leaders are made out to be especially egregious in American society - as though Catholics or Jews, for example, have never faced such problems. Trying to fold these abuses into a wider Islamophobic narrative is insidious.
But there is a very particular and specific problem that Muslim American communities face, which is shown in this piece. There is no nationally accepted body that all Muslim Americans respect that can take the role of a church structure when it comes to disciplining its members.

Brief Commentary on what I see in parents pushing kids in the quest to one-up each other in the college arms race:

Stop. If YOU are the reason your kid is striving for good grades, great athletic achievements, etc. they will struggle in college. It needs to come from within THEM
Yes, I realize you see doom and gloom if little Johnny gets a B in Pre-Cal, or gets 15th place instead of finishing on the podium. But here's the reality. The #1 thing that will matter in his future success isn't what college he gets into or his grades...
It's whether he can be intrinsically motivated toward mastering something that catches his interest. If he can harness motivation, he'll figure the rest out. So when you constantly push her, you are training her AWAY from that.

Ideally, buying goods from a market overt, without any notice as to the defect in the title is enough defence, in so far as the goods were bought for a fair value but this is Nigeria where the vast majority of our Policemen are very ignorant of the law
So this guy of northern extraction (Haruna) was working as a gateman in Benin and someone approached him offering a small generator for sale. They bargained and agreed for 7k. The next day the guy brought the generator in a sack, collected the money and left.

The first report that a letter existed surfaced because staffers for Judiciary Committee Democrats complained to media that Senator Feinstein was hiding a letter relevant to the Kavanaugh confirmation.
