Lots of ppl seeing the crass, belligerent pro-Brexit speeches at CPC18 as part of a strategy to engineer no-deal while shifting the blame onto the EU. I'm not sure: I think short-term polling is driving this. Keep the base fired up and unified; court the nationalist vote. #CPC18
As Trump & Brexit both show, in representative democracies with voting systems that can be 'gamed'*, the winner isn't whoever 51% of ppl would opt for if forced to choose between two alternatives: it's whoever can get most people fired up in support of the cause. Sad but true.
* By "voting systems that can be 'gamed'", I mean voting systems where you can win a disproportionate share of power/parliamentary representation by piling up support in certain areas e.g. FPTP, US electoral college. Contrast with variants of PR or French-style 2-round voting.

Reminder to The Sun: during the EUref campaign, Jo Cox was murdered not at random by some random individual but by a man who shouted “keep Britain independent” as he stabbed her.
Very telling that The Sun suddenly wants to highlight the latent extremism of a fringe minority now that support for Brexit is unravelling but didn’t make a fuss about this tendency when they were getting their way. Excuse me if I see their concern now as cynical & opportunistic.
I guess my point is that The Sun shouldn’t so much be saying “Ooh we have to do Brexit otherwise there’ll be violence”: it should be saying (to a different set of ppl) “look guys, even if you don’t get your way, violence isn’t ok so cool it.”

John Rentoul is impressed with the quality of Michael Gove's piece defending May's Brexit deal. He loves this: "Does it deliver 100% of what I wanted? No. But then we didn’t win 100% of the vote on 23 June 2016." This sounds plausible but is in fact a completely bogus argument.
You can only justifiably invoke your electoral mandate delivered at the ballot box if you campaigned honestly & unambiguously. If Leave had offered a clear, unitary, achievable prospectus then 52% would mean something.
But they didn't. Leave *deliberately* set out to reel in voters by playing to a wide range of different and mutually incompatible expectations. That's how they cobbled together 52%.

Unpopular opinion: everybody outraged about Marr's behaviour towards Shami Chakrabarti but she fucked up & was naive. Use the "I voted Remain but I'm a democrat" line if you must* but "I'm a democrat, I don't know about you, Andrew" foolishly makes it about the interviewer. (1/3)
Ppl who follow me will confirm I'm no fan of Marr: he's past-it, often out of his depth, sloppy & complacent (wings it on complicated subject), & not a fearless interviewer (too inclined to pull punches with the govt). Just type "from:eurosluggard marr" in your search bar. (2/3)

Brexit was doomed from June 24th 2016, from the day after the referendum, because there was not, and never could be, a working majority for it

This poll was taken in September 2016 - and it highlights the failure
2) Now polls are notoriously self selecting however this ran in pro #Brexit telegraph, 52K people took part & the breakdown roughly equals the ref vote

We can translate the questions roughly into Brexit options (no deal wasn't there then,because brexiters weren't that desperate)
3) Lets put Remain to one side for a second. In such a close vote, literally every Leaver would have to want roughly the same thing. But they didn't, it wasn't even close

For every 2 leavers who wanted a Hard Brexit, 1 wanted Norway & the single market, which are polls apart

1) In 2015 Cameron went to EU for reform.
I said, if he returns with something tangible, I'd support his choice on EURef (Remain, turns out).
EU sent him home with his tail between his legs & made me a hardened #Brexit supporter, when I saw them humiliate him.
2) Cameron was a giant amongst mere clowns, but they still disrespected him.
He stands above every one of them, as the leader who steered his nation best through the choppy waters of the 2008 economic crash.
They had no RIGHT to humiliate the man.
3) Ever since then, EU has been arrogant & constantly felt entitled to humliliate our PM.
I've gone from being willing to listen & possibly Remain, to wanting out on whatever terms necessary.
WTO is my benchmark, I'll accept a reasonable deal, but no half-way measures at all.

Right from the start of the campaign ~ generated to keep Cameron in power and stave off the 'bastards' sic.Major on the right/UKIP, pure racism was allowed and encouraged in the press. A subtle game was played whereby legit EU citizens were turned into 'illegal migrants. #brexit
Outright lies of Leave.EU and Voteleave were never publically opposed by any MPs ~ and indeed, the *crimes* committed by both organisations are not being investigated by the police,nor Govt declared the ref null & void on what has been uncovered by @carolecadwalla

It is no surprise Twitter targets accounts for “wrong think” or as we on the #Right like to call it “free-think” this is because of two events which are now totally and utterly inextricably linked, #Brexit and #Trump and the Establishment have been rocked to the core. 2/15

Jaguar Land Rover recently agreed 2 build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, same company who trashed our steel industry & emptied workers pension funds.

#Brexit as a concept is increasingly drifting from having anything whatsoever to do with the mechanics of leaving the EU. It is now primarily a culture war and both sides will totally ignore the details except for when they are temporarily convenient.
The consequence of this is that our future relationship with the EU will be just as readily ignored as our activities as a member. They said Brexit would make us isolated, self absorbed and insular but it seems that was always the case and there are no signs of that changing.
As ever the details will be delegated to officials and civil servants while our establishment politics drifts further into its cycle of decline, unable to usefully influence external events making us entirely passive and reactive to events rather than self-interestedly engaged.
