This block may be SF's most filthy, but many many many blocks are truly disgusting. And every block in Mission/SOMA is trash strewn always. nytimes.com/2018/10/08/us/…
The opioid and homelessness crisis are incredibly difficult to combat and have recombined in terrible ways, but there's also just a lack of street cleaning, garbage cans, and pickups that befit the city 10 years ago maybe but not now.
An increase in population, a massive increase in package waste--we just need more street cleaning crews and more frequent sweeping and trashcan emptying. And more trash cans!
Blocks that look ok--usually because either of BID in commercial areas or diligent residents. There's an old guy who picks up trash on my block every morning. Milo and I do a big push most weekends. But it is indeed Sisyphean.
Yesterday I spent 20 minutes on hold for @SF311 trying to call in a dead raccoon opposite Cesar Chavez Elem. and, while i was on the line, overflowing trashcans for 6 blocks. Doubling the frequency of trash can emptying would go a long way to improving trash problem.
Here is a report that shows how/ ~why SF spends more on street cleaning than other cities and gets, literally, shitty results: sfbos.org/sites/default/… (density/homelessness)
One thing that I've been curious about, prompted by @MarkFarrellSF yolo mayor moves, is if we're proportionately doling out street cleaning to areas that need it more. Not just the crisis block cleanup crews, but the more prosaic services.
Seems like there should be a pilot program to see if putting more 24-hr pit stops (bathroom, needle disposal) in, say, the TenderLoin, would “pay” for itself re cleaner streets, less need to pick up poop, & increased quality of life for homeless and homed both.
