<now in English> SO YOU’VE HEARD OF BOLSONARO. You’ve heard he is a far-right authoritarian. But is he really that bad? Well, he is really THAT bad. Follow along the thread as I unpack and translate this: agenciasportlight.com.br/index.php/2018…
We’re now in 2003 and the Brazilian Congress is discussing a very serious matter: In the northeastern State of Bahia, Death Squads were roaming around, charging R$50-100 (15-25 USD) to murder supposed “criminals” - invariably the young, the black and the poor.
Alright, so this researcher pored over this stuff, and this is the picture that emerged: these groups were composed mainly of off-duty/ex cops and military, hired by local business owners and shopkeepers
But who exactly were they executing? The overwhelming majority of victims were aged 16-24, black, had prior records - and even if they had the largest records ever, nothing can ever justify EXTERMINATION GANGS - this is Genocide and we can’t be allow ourselves to be desensitized
Are you shocked by the level of inhumanity that, in a country that likes to think of itself as modern and worldly, death squads were killing for less than 30 dollars? Well, hang on because it get’s worse still:
The way the bodies were found indicate that, they were not only criminally murdered, but also TORTURED by the mercenaries, and they would even burn the bodies after it all. Truly medieval.
Alright, but what has Bolsonaro got to do with all this? Well, we’re in 2003, the issue is brought to the floor of the House. Bolsonaro speaks. What does he say? “The crime of extermination, in my opinion, is very much welcome”.
Transcript: below and at bit.ly/2pOl7bP
Wait a second. Did I just read that right? Yes. He not only failed to condemn MERCENARY DEATH SQUADS, but he also celebrated and cheered them on. And now he is running as a pro-life candidate. Hard to swallow.
So, the lesson here: Bolsonaro not only defends the murderers and torturers of the military dictatorship, but he also defends the murderers and torturers of the present.
And good chunks of the Business and Finance press is buying what he is selling.
Remember this when you hear people trying to downplay Bolsonaro. It is not “just a joke”. It is not just a weird quirk of the pro-business guy. This is very serious. You can’t look past this.
We’re talking about the country with one of the highest murder rates in the world, and he is praising murder squads. And for some reason, some good chunks of “”BUSINESS AND FINANCE”” press are writing ringing endorsements of this maniac.
This is NOT something you can tolerate in exchange for “fiscal reform of the public sector”, “pro-market reforms” or whatever vague term financial markets seek. This is a genocidal tyrant, not an inconvenience to be had in exchange for some privatizations.
If you know Portuguese, I recommend you read the whole piece from @agsportlight.

I made a typo here - meant to say NO PRIOR RECORDS.
Not that it should matter....
