I’ve dedicated my career to avoiding that faith 😄. Went so far as to institute a hiring freeze at Basecamp at the peak of our success to avoid it! Small is beautiful. Small is powerful. Small is not a stepping stone.
Working in a small company with small teams allows for values that “doesn’t scale”. Like placing an “unrealistic” emphasis on the craft and quality of every pull request. To relish in how pleasing the circuitry is laid out inside the box that customers never see.
I completely sympathize with how such aspirations and ideals can seem quaint, unrealistic, or even challenging to people who feel unable to embrace such pursuits at work. Working at a big company has other advantages, and I’m thankful Rails has contributors from both camps 🙏❤️
I am however disappointed when I see “beautiful code” denigrated because the speaker can’t conceive of why someone would care about aesthetics. Dancing joyfully with the machine, just for the pleasure of the movements, is the love of my work ❤️. Utility is a distant second.
Yes, programming for the love and grace of the movements is an immense privilege. I have the outmost respect for anyone who choose programming primarily because it pays the bills or solves the problem. I did that starting out. (Just don’t stop there.) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_…
