Short thread: We should be focusing on what happened BEFORE the Proud Boys attacks in NYC.

Here is actual video of a deranged 17-year-old murdering a man with a samurai sword merely because he's a socialist. Japan, 1960. 1/
The attacker's name? Otoya Yamaguchi. A sick, irrelevant young man. A murderer. Not a hero. 2/
Proud Boys leader Gavin McInnes has a shtick where he f*cking REENACTS THAT MURDER. He brings a samurai sword, and recreates the senseless murder of a socialist for... audiences. THAT'S the event the Proud Boys were attending that night: the reenactment of a murder. 3/
Who in the hell thought it would be fun to watch a modern fascist recreate the senseless murder of a socialist? Who would be so sick?

1/ It's the season for me to trot out my personal, fondly-held "It's a Wonderful Life" fanfic theory.

"It's a Wonderful Life" is about George Bailey, who lives in boring Bedford Falls, NY but yearns to see the world. He loves "anchor chains, plane motors, + train whistles."
2/ But ESPECIALLY anchor chains. Boats and water are recurring themes in the film. George plans to work his way to Europe on a cattle boat ("I LIKE cows!"). His brother joins the Navy.

Thread: Mueller recommended zero jail time for Flynn, but years in jail for Cohen, even though both have provided "substantial cooperation." That difference partly is due to diffs in the sentencing guidelines for their respective crimes -- BUT it also may contain a clue. 1/
There are two ways a prosecutor can reward a defendant for cooperation. The first is prior to sentencing, via a "5K 1.1 motion." That's what Mueller did with Flynn. That's for when the prosecutor already has extracted everything he expects to get from the cooperator. 2/
But that doesn't work when the prosecutor needs the witness to CONTINUE cooperating after sentencing, because once the defendant has received a relatively low sentence, the prosecutor loses leverage. He can't have the sentence INCREASED for failure to keep cooperating. 3/

Background: For 50 years, authoritarians have been consolidating power, steadily undermining public confidence in our government and our institutions.
1/ While the GOP morphed from a conservative party to an authoritarian one, Democrats (& moderate conservatives) didn’t understand or recognize the danger.

They didn’t understand the extent to which they were being manipulated by Putin-style tactics.
