Oh @cmrlofficial . Why so averse to learning? New stations, same old access problems. #Senior #Joyride thread - I spy with my jaundiced eye. #ChennaiMetro #A11y #Fails @DisabilityIndia
Really @chennaicorp ! This is the access to Nehru Park Chennai Metro station? At points the pavement itself is non existent with bus and Poonamallee High Rd traffic whizzing by. Senior citizen required support on both sides with parking 50 m away. @cmrlofficial @DisabilityIndia
1 foot footpath with trip with at one side and someone sitting blocking the other side of the tree. Not to mention the auto blocking the way too. #Pedestrian #Accessibility #NotACakeWalk
So here's the @cmrlofficial Nehru Park entrance - it's missing the accessibility signage to indicate the elevator entrance is a little further ahead. Also, anyone who trips on the steps may well land up sprawled on P.H. Rd as potential roadkill. #Hazard @DisabilityIndia
The ramp is ridged to make up for the lack of non slip surface and could do with a railing on the other side too. Crutch and wheelchair users will have to provide feedback on independent usability. Sign esp pictogram is still contrast + size fail @cmrlofficial @DisabilityIndia
Phone operator picked up after many rings, and then couldn't be heard. What's with the brilliant design of buttons behind the railing @johnsonlift ? Braille missing on the concourse / stair labels, and is it English or Tamil Braille for non numbers?
Counters counters, but not a single @cmrlofficial wheelchair accessible ticket counter in sight. #Compliance #NBC #Standards #Accessibility #Fail #MetroRail #A11y @DisabilityIndia
The needlessly glossy, reflective surfaces are relieved to an extent with the contrasted skirting, the floor slip potential warrants a pendulum test else the closest hospital emergency dept will see a stream of seniors who've had a tumble. Monitor contrast is good! @cmrlofficial
Kiosk is inaccessible for a wheelchair user. The keypad option has been masked. Braille stickers have been provided though. Didn't test the headphone option, last @cmrlofficial access audit it wasn't activated. #transit #Metro #a11y @DisabilityIndia
The entrance turnstiles are still too high for a wheelchair user to see where to swipe. Strangely the wheelchair accessible ticket gate is available only at the exit. No doubt there's a bypass @cmrlofficial but surely 1 could've been made a little wider? A #Fail @DisabilityIndia
Totally approve of the platform sliding doors, high time other metros adopt this. In other stations too please @cmrlofficial ? Didn't notice tactile floor directions, took me a while to understand it to be honest. @DisabilityIndia #Transport #Accessibility #Chennai #Metro
What is that emergency alarm system doing so high up on the wall? Universal design, anyone? This is a flashback to the first @cmrlofficial audit. No refuge points demarcated for disabled passengers though lift sign says to take steps in case of fire. @DisabilityIndia #a11y #SOS
So in one compartment the Tamil station map had been deactivated, in another the English. Surely it can't be to save power @cmrlofficial! Deaf people miss extra announcements - share autos, feeder services etc. Relocate the tripole @AlstomIndia, it's tough for wheelchair egress.
* trip wire
Include international symbol for disability accessibility for your special needs signage @cmrlofficial! Even in this, must we be kept apart? Mother holding child, senior citizen, pregnant woman but no wheelchair symbol? No mention of invisible disabilities. #ToBeAPartAndNotApart
This @AlstomIndia emergency communication system has confounded me from the first time I set eyes on it. What is the difference between blinking wait and busy wait? Who or what is healthy? Test what? How does a blind person know when light is green - (but thanks for the Braille!)
Banished to a corner is the reserved seat for disabled passenger, with tiny, poor contrast sign high above like it's embarrassed. Trip is too short for wheelchair user transfer, so location of grab rail / fold seat is puzzling. Long stop at platform, lift too pls @AlstomIndia ?
Though level, the gap of 1.5 inches between platform and coach would still leave the wheelchair passenger in 7 @cmrlofficial . Though one m9ust commend the excellent, very helpful staff at various points. Why not equip them with a flap out ramp ?
This looked real fancy, but couldn't spot a tactile route layout / map option @cmrlofficial ?
There's no real reason for the guiding path for blind to go through the wheelchair ticket gate is there? Accessibility blinkers @cmrlofficial ?
Logic fail!
That's the slope which my Dad stumbled upon. There is a sign warning about the change in level, but it's not very prominent. Floor markings weren't noticed either .@cmrlofficial @df
This info wasn't available on the @cmrlofficial website, just a list of stations offering parking, no details about whether in same complex. Similarly it is silent on facilities available like wheelchairs, escalators and lifts. And Twitter carries no news on kaput facilities.
But nothing compares to the lack of accessibility in the outside built environment! Moving at obstacle pace on the way back to @cmrlofficial parking. C'mon CUMTA, you can do better for an accessible experience.
Because we're optimists and assume that the way to the @cmrlofficial station from parking will soon be accessified, can we have the disabled passenger parking slots demarcated please. With better access to the parking ticket booth? Thanks! #a11y @TRANSED2012 @DisabilityIndia
