2004 - I remember being so relieved when I could finally stop running my own email server. Why? Because the GMail beta was out and it was awesome.

Goodbye Postfix and Squirrelmail, hello GMail.

Now, it's looking like email servers at home is cool again? thehelm.com
2 My initial response was similar to @iiamit - "wait, what? - Is running a personal server myself really the best option right now?"

But I get it - privacy is an issue that has many people concerned. Still... there's a lot to give up here.
3 With GMail, I can instantly, easily search all my email anytime and from anywhere with simple search operators and filters. In a time when email is so overused, search and organization is important.

The Helm offers IMAP. Good luck finding anything 3 years from now.
4 I get that "free isn't free", but at $500 + $100/yr, most of the people that would be interested in something like The Helm can either build it themselves using existing hardware they have at home, or in the cloud for $5-10/mo.
5 Also, in the cloud, you don't have to worry as much about flaky Internet access preventing important emails from getting to you or going out. I'm not sure the current state of broadband in the US is going to encourage me to run servers at home in 2018.
6 Finally, for privacy fanatics, a Protonmail account is free, you don't have to run your own server, comes with a snazzy, modern interface and apps. It also addresses most of the issues The Helm intends to solve without the additional compromises (expensive hardware, IMAP, etc).
7/FIN Anyone interested in The Helm? Did I miss any big pros or cons? Is Protonmail really its primary competition? Will Google make a move to win privacy fanatics back?
