A lot of people are eager to blame right's rhetoric for creating an environment that encourages hateful violence, while themselves promoting dehumanizing caricatures of their political opponents and excusing attacks from the media and the left which have clearly also contributed.

Again, this is an issue on both sides. You can justify almost anything when you view your opponents as evil. Both sides and the press have contributed to a political approach that justifies that view.
